I too have dealt with discrimination due to my looks. "That guy must workout 8 hours a day! Who has time for that?!" or "I wonder if he's had plastic surgery, nobody can be that hott naturally!".

Sad how people can't see past a person's looks. A damn shame!

when you're heavy, the world hates you and it just gets on your nerves and I can completely see why Big Dave is pissed off. OK, I know that being heavy sucks. I am 300lbs and should only weight 180 tops. It's hard to get laughed at. The people I work with are merciless and I have to hear it every day. It makes me want to walk in with a cheeseburger and a bazooka and kill them all. But, I blow it off, every day.
Sometimes, it just, you know, gets to you and you react. That's what I think Dave was getting at posting here. I wouldn't dogpile on him for that.

This thread is really pissing me off. After I read Sam's post I started thinking about the impact these assholes have had on my life. It is a different from Sam's. Since I was a 12 I have just wished I was invisible. It seems impossible to leave the house alone without getting some kind of comment. My problems aren't with work, but the streets are terrible. The best thing that ever happened to me as the invention of the walkman. I remember when I was about 12 and borrowed one. I immediately begged my mom for one, didn't get one so in desperation I stole one. I may not have become invisible but now I can shut the world out.

The comments I hear now are only in breaks between songs or when my batteries die. When I was in university I had to walk past a huge construction site everyday to get to and from school. After months of this route I was walking through and my batteries died. At that moment I realized that for months every time I walked by it was to a chorus of these men screaming obscenities at me. I just kept walking, pretending my music was still playing and from that day on had to walk 5 blocks out of my way everyday to avoid these fuckers.

It is absolutely horrible to know that you are constantly being evaluated. It makes me so self conscious and sick. I don't even go on breaks from work without my headphones blaring. I see people saying stuff to me all the time, but I don't know what they are saying, for the most part. The recent comments I heard (during quiet parts of songs) ranged from compliments on my hair to insults on my socks. Seriously! Why would some random fucker on the street think I care about what he thinks about my socks? I was tucking my socks into my pants before I got on my bike and he decided to yell at me that they were disgustingly ugly (there was nothing special about them) and it did upset me. Not because I cared what he thought, he was obviously an asshole. It bothered me because I thought I can't even get onto my bike in peace. It makes you not want to deal with society.

Sam, I honestly don't know how you manage to drag yourself to work everyday. I think I would rather die. You are much stronger than me.

People say just to ignore these insults but after a while, when it is persistent, or in some cases coupled with physical abuse, it gets impossible. I ended up lashing out one day and someone did get hurt. Next thing I knew, I was suspended from school, ordered to seek counseling and labeled as a bully by the asshole principal. He knew what was going on but didn't give a shit because I was not one of the pretty (read skinny) people. The bullies had a great laugh over that and the bullying continued for the next year and a half. I was very glad to graduate grade eight and start high school.

This is what drives me crazy. This whole blame the victim attitude.

This is the reason fat people get targeted so much, because the bullies can comfort themselves with the notion that these people brought it on themselves. They might even think that they are helping the person by motivating them by constantly insulting and harassing them.

Bullies do it because they're insecure themselves. By pushing people down and instilling fear, they feel superior. I'm five feet two inches, and at my heaviest I weighed 190 pounds. My grades dropped from mid 80's-90's to low 70's because I didn't want to leave the house. I sat around and whined about how the world was against me because I was fat, and continued to tell myself it wasn't my fault. It was over a bowl of ice cream (surprise!) on a Tuesday afternoon that I realized I had a problem - and my problem was doing nothing.

I'm genetically predisposed to be fat. My mother and I both have to fight to keep the weight off and to keep losing, but I've gone from boatloads of medication and enduring physical abuse at school to being able to walk down the street and feel somewhat confident and only get offhand jokes with friends.

Unless you're one of the few millions of people with thyroid disease, (out of billions of obese people) there really is no excuse. So you have a choice. You can sit here at the computer and mope, or you can take control.

I'm so sick of everyone wanting the world to be all puppies and rainbows. We're all adults here, and we've all been around long enough to know that the world just doesn't work that way. There are always going to be assholes, and showing how much things get to you only makes them want to do it more.

Either do something to change what you're getting picked on for, or stop putting so much stock in what some douchebag says in passing just to get a reaction.
