If you want 4x4 i would suggest:

110951.jpg (42 kb, 400x266)

An Early 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee, easy to maintain, and super easy to find.

110953.jpg (16 kb, 400x213)

An Early 90's Ford Explorer, also really easy to find.

110954.jpg (63 kb, 400x266)

Or an Early 90's Nissan Pathfinder, not as easy to find.

If you need AWD I'd suggest:

Early 90's Subaru Legacy sedan or wagon, Super reliable and lots of fun if you find one with a turbo engine.

Or an early 90's Subaru Justy (good luck finding one though)

The Jeeps had transmissions and transfer cases that were junk. I recommend a Wrangler if anything.

The Ford Explorer... if it has an automatic, stay right the hell away from them. You can't give automatic Suxplorers away up here.

Pathfinders are pretty rugged, but have a rot issue with the older ones. Again, find one with a manual transmission if you find one.

If you want economy, roll with a Subaru, again, make sure it's a standard transmission.

Sam is soooooo right about the explorer.

My stepdad is getting ready to get rid of his. The check engine light's on for the 20th time and we're getting sick of putting throttle control sensors in the bastard.

Only thing wrong with my buick...the blower for the heater's shot...I think. I'm not sure. It's either the blower's fried, a control box in the dash is shot, a broken wire or a bad fuse. I find out Thursday when I get the oil changed.

I'd vote for Subaru... early 90's Legacys are cheap, a blast to drive, and you can put STI struts and brakes on them. Turbo ones have a lot of potential too.

Legacy and Impreza Brightons are super cheap as well, because they're total base models. The Impreza Brighton didn't even come with a passenger's side mirror.

GL for $2k lol.

For uniqueness and street cred, I suggest an AWD Caravan, preferably with wood paneling.

I actually used to have an AMC Eagle sedan... baby blue, with a dark blue landau top, and blue shag carpet. It definitely fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Not much fun to drive either (heavy, gutless, no handling), but man, it'd crawl through ANYTHING.

everything after the 2.2/2.5L years sucks.

Yes; most of the AWD Caravans you see up here are from the soccer moms from California who traded them while they were under 50k on the odometer.
