Days Off

So two months ago I told my General Manager that I need this Saturday off and the 2 weekends in Nov. This Saturday is for the UER event and in Nov. is my birthday present trip to go deep sea fishing. He said "ok not a problem" and I found a kid to cover my shifts. 3 weeks ago this kid quits and I reminded my boss and he was still cool with it, but I had to find someone to cover for me.

Every single driver refuses to cover for me on BOTH weekends. Now I have worked every weekend since 4th of July without ever missing one or even taking a day off in that time. Every other driver gets any day off he/she wants without needing to get anyone to cover for them. In fact, all the drivers have had at least 2-3 days a month no problems. The new driver we just hired just got 3 weeks off so he can go play in his band. But I can't 3 days off with 2 months in advance?

Manager now wants me to cancel all my plans to come work which I pretty much refuse to as I want to do something fun for once as the last 6 months I have worked every day or had school on days off..Literally no life or going anywhere.

To top it off..The new General Manager coming in a month has appointed his gf (who is a driver) as his Assistant Manager. He constantly favors her and his room mate(also a driver) and both of them constantly mess up or never complete the job. There also constantly missing work and short notice saying they want to go out of town...

Life is tough...Wait no I will walk out =)

Before you walk out I'd walk up to the manager and just be like "Hey! You're corrupt! You're gonna give me these days off or I'm reporting you to corporate and walking out."

could be fun. Keep us posted.

Sounds like what happened where I work.

We've had a lot of attrition where I am in the mill. In the past few months, something like 10 people have taken transfers out of the department, into other departments where the working conditions aren't so bad.

Usually they're not that bad, I'm left alone, I do my job and I go home, end of story. The hardest part is the schedule because there's so much forced overtime due to bullshit things like nobody being able to cover a slot on one crew or something, so everybody works 12 hour shifts. Anyway, some people have been on 12 hours for months.

Well, recently, the company decided to change how we get personal days due to this. Every employee is allowed 8 personal days a year due to the fact we're a 24/7/365 operation and you do have to work national holidays. It's a day off with pay you're allowed to use whenever you want. Usually you fill out a form a week before and it's granted if there's someone to cover it for you or the person you relieve and the person that relieves you work 12 hours that day or two days or whatever. You can ask for two or three at a time, no more than that. The company recently implemented two new rules...if someone across from you in the same classification has a vacation that week, you can't have a personal day that week or if someone is out of the mill that week for company business, you can't have a personal day that week either.

Getting days off when you want them depends on who you work for, when you want them and who likes you and doesn't like you. If management hates you, they'll find a reason to shoot down every personal day request you make. I've seen this happen time and again. I usually don't have many problems, my step dad worked there for almost 40 years, Samurai's dad worked there for 30 years, usually I put in for personal days to spend with him, management knows it, so does the scheduling clerk. When he's got a long weekend, I put in for two or three or whatever and I get them. Last summer, I ended up with like every weekend off Samurai had off because I could be scheduled to fill in on a 5 day a week job.

You're not alone, even in a union shop this shit's happening. It's not fair, not in the least, but it happens everywhere.

I am not sure how much you need this job. I would just inform him that you are unable to secure someone to work for you. Bottom line, you gave plenty of notice and he approved it.

Mr. so and so I will not be here on such and such a date, period end of discussion, walk away. Be firm with him. If he follows you and says anything but OK ignore him and just continue with your business.

Well push came to shove and now the Regional Manager has told everyone he is hiring a new weekend driver for everyone accept me and other drivers with 40 hours. He called all the part time drivers on the amount of time they had off and how they abused the system.

Plus, if this person wants more hours he will cut it from people who will never cover.
