I am pissed off at how STUPID I was at Halloween. I have a severe allergy to Cinnamon, and instead of READING labels and ingredients.. I pop the yummiest looking gumball in my mouth.... well guess what! It was a hot cinnamon ball.

So I had to keep the IV tab in my arm for 24 hours after I left the hospital... I have a cut on my head where I smashed my head off of a metal box (I passed out) and I am carrying around an EpiPen around with me because I'm retarded.

Wow that sucks and is a really weird allergy. Umm, when that letter that smells cinnamony which I mailed you shows up at your mailbox, you may not want to open it.

I did the same thing at Thanksgiving last year. I have a deadly allergy to mixed nuts. I ALWAYS read the ingredients of everything I eat. There was only one dessert I was interested in and nobody could find the box it came out of. I trusted somebody saying "I don't THINK there is any nuts in there" and spent the next 5 hours in the ER.

Stupid me left my epi pen in my desk at work.

BTW, if your new to the epi pen, you still should go to the ER if you need to use it. It shoots your vitals up to dangerous levels at times.

I'm not NEW to it, just haven't used one in years. I know they only last about 15 minutes, so ya... I usually get to the hospital or call an ambulance a.s.a.p

You don't need a prescription for them, but they are quite expensive if you have to buy them outright. They keep them behind the counter at any pharmacy.

WOAH, woah woah. Even if you AREN'T new to using epi-pens, you should ALWAYS GO TO THE ER when you need to use it. That means do things like this:
1) Expose yourself to the irritant
2) Begin the process of literally drowning in your own fluids
3) Jab self in leg with epi-pen
4) Fluids begin draining, shit opens up, huge headache takes over
5) Call 911 NOW (if someone else hasn't already)
6) Go to hospital with ambulance, probably lights and sirens.

... epinephrine is NOT a cure-all for allergies. It is NOT the antidote. epinephrine is simply a temporary suppressant of anaphylaxis. So, you aren't going to the ER simply because epinephrine (um, adrenaline?) shoots your heart rate and blood pressure up, you're going because you've only got 10-15 minutes before that shit wears off and you actually go into anaphylactic shock! AND THEN DIE! By drowning in your own fluids!

Nobody wants that!

Hey, why'd ya have to keep that IV in your arm after you got out of the hospital? Strange... Or was it so they wouldn't have to tap a new vein if you relapsed?

Good question. I'd assumed that there was a twenty-four hour period in which vampires were permitted a convenient meal.

That's exactly it. They wanted to keep it in just incase I had a second reaction after the steroids wore off.

Emma, I agree 100%. What I meant by "if your new to the epi pen" was that sometimes your not well informed about the need to still get yourself to the ER if you have to use it.

I was given a prescription for it by a nurse at my GP's office. I had NO IDEA about also going to the ER if I use the pen. She gave me the prescription and said "this should do it".

YES, I should have read the pamphlet more throroughly but I didn't. Figured if there were any dangers, requirements, etc., that went along with the pen, that they would have informed me. Didn't happen.

Squidgit that was a nasty thing to have happen. Keep reading ingredients on things that you eat all the time. They change recopies. My daughter has been drinking the same hot chocolate for quite sometime. Now they have added coconut. She can't have it.

Don't want to scare anyone but you really really need to keep that pen within reach at all times. I know all too well that if you have to wait to use it, it might be too late.

You got double screwed there. The doctor and the pharmacy should have told you all of that.

Ach. You know, I'm always really adamant about my allergies. When I order a strawberry smoothie somewhere, I say, "And PLEASE make sure that it is in a clean container with a CLEAN lid. I'm VERY allergic to bananas and I don't want to take the risk."

At work, the cooks sometimes wear latex gloves -- yeah, it is only a matter of time before they send me to the hospital. I'm not so much allergic to the rubber as I am to the powder (though as it gets worse, the rubber allergy is beginning to show up). Sometimes, the two stupid ones will make my food with latex gloves, or hand me a plate that they've touched with latex.

Every time I see this stuff (and I keep a HUGE eye on them), I probably sound like a raging bitch but if I don't, they won't take it seriously. Or at least if I bitch at them... they'll do what I want, while wondering WTF my problem is.

.......I always feel weird when I start standing up for myself about these, but it is seriously a matter of life or death for me. People always look at me like I'm fucking nuts when I ask for a clean container, and if I explain it, they still don't care/do what they're supposed to.

I just don't get it.

Tell me about it. I ordered ice cream from Friendlys not too long ago and asked them to wash the scoop before scooping my ice cream. (They just rinse the scoops in a sink already filled with water). She said "its only ice cream that gets rinsed off in this sink, not silverware".

So I had to explain to her that if she rinsed a scooper that had maple walnut residue on it, then it got onto MY ice cream, we'd have a big problem.

She gave me total attitude. You'd think people who work in the food industry would get better training regarding food allergies.

I hear ya. I got a total SNOB at Tim Hortons one time because I saw them cutting a cinnamon raisin bagel before mine. I explained to them I'm allergic and told them to rinse off the knife and spreading tool before touching my bagel. She was TOTALLY pissed off at me.

Wow I thought I was the only one who was allergic to bananas. Over time it came to include all types of mellon. Sheesh!

I don't order anything like smoothies anymore. They never clean the container and even if they do they still use the mixer that mixed the last one.

My daughter is allergic to any type of nut, tree and ground nuts, eggs and mushrooms. We have to read every label and have to ask what type of oil things are fried in. I have pissed off more food service employees than I can count. I have walked out of places when they get snippy. For some reason they don't understand that an order of french fries done in peanut oil could kill my kid in minutes.

I can get smoothies from the local Gold's Gym, Orange Julius, and the Sodhexo bar at my school. They all use those 3-minute pressure washer things, and most of the people there know me, now, and always use clean containers.

My allergy to bananas is considered a cross-allergy from latex. Is yours?

Actually, if you or anyone you know is allergic to latex, they're 50-70% more likely to be SEVERELY allergic to (and should avoid) the following:
BANANAS
avocados
kiwis
chestnuts

They are apparently MODERATELY susceptible to being allergic to these:
apples
carrots
celery
tomatoes
papaya
potatoes
and MELONS

And the more you're exposed, the worse the allergy gets...
