For a police car, I can understand, or if you're into lumber business, but who else really needs that power? I have a 90 horsepower Golf TDi and I have more than enough power. My car is superefficient (about 1:22, about 55 mile to the gallon) and I very, very rarely actually *need* the power.

Tij, you're lucky enough to have REAL diesel and not this new formula BS we've got here in America, which is roughly half as efficient as regular diesel. Plus, the huge horsepower thing is just a pissing contest that a lot of us like to play. There's something to be said about the sound a 320+HP V8 makes. Plus, muscle cars were the cheap tuners of the 60's and 70's here, so many of us either grew up with them or our dads did and we inherited the need for all those ponies.

You know that Luigie, in the movie cars was a Fiat 500, if I remember correctly. As for Turbozutek and Tijmen they are coming from a reality where gas is probably very expensive, so a car with good mileage is imperative. However if gas were $2.00 a gallon, as it is for the time being in the colonies. They would both give their left testicals to have a 400 horse power Mitsubishi, Subaru, Focus, all wheel drive rally racer. Nobody Needs 400 horse power, but god is it fun to use once in awhile. Although if not carefull you could squirt right off the end of that little green Island!! I happen to own 6 big fat American gas hogs, non are my daily driver. Those duties fall to a little Nissan 4x4 truck, and a Honda Element, or one of many motorcycles that are in various states of disrepair. As gas gets to $5.00 a gallon as it was last summer, I'll be looking to buy a 2009 euro version of the Sunny twinkleray 1.1 liter propane Hybrid.

That's where your probably wrong. In Europe, we accept the fact that oil isn't in limitless supply. I'd really like it to LAST at least until I can teach my daughter to drive, hey? Running around in a gas guzzling SUV, for instance, will have you branded as a 'cock' by the common man on the street. Over here, the majority of motorists ain't compensating for anything. If 'Gas' (and I'm sure you mean Diesel in this case) was 2p a litre, I still wouldn't go out and buy a power station on wheels. That's why you'll find that even the super high performance monster cars in Europe have still been designed with [some measure of] fuel efficiency in mind. Would I have a 400Hp racer ? Sure!! It'd make a good weekend car. Would I buy one and run it as my primary vehicle? No fucking way. The frustration of sitting in traffic daily with more power than an ocean liner on tap would be FAR too frustrating, for one. Chris...

I have the exact same feeling. Here, we have "gas" (not gasoline but LPG) which is very cheap, diesel is more expensive and petrol is even more expensive. However, the taxation on the cars is such that at about 30000 km/y it doesn't metter what you drive, below that petrol is the cheapest, diesel above that. I just make a sport out of driving as efficient as I can, I get a kick out of my trip counter saying "1085" when I pull into the gas station. That's the same when diesel was EUR 1.50 as now, when it's EUR 0.98. And above all, I allways chose the "super" diesel (Shell V-power, BP Ultimate etc) because I know it DOES give me a lot of extra mileage. However, I don't know whether it's more cost efficient. I think that in the year I have my car now, I've ONCE touched the full horsepower range of my car, when I was coming from a side road onto a very busy main road and had been waiting for 2 minutes when a small gap opened and I had to go from 0 to 80 km/h in a few seconds. Then I do love my TDI. At other times I make sure I reach my target spead by the end of the onramp, so as not to waste energy by accellerating too much. Tijmen
