| | | As soon as I see an Indy car, or nascar, or Blown fuel funnycar, or a Top fueler that is front wheel drive. Thats when I'll be convinced of the superiority of frontwheel drive! They work for mild performance applications on a very smooth or rolling hill type track, but get on a track that puts some air under the wheels, where you need to steer with the ass end of the car. That's where RWD really outshines frontwheel drive! I have never seen a front wheel drive buggy, though I'm sure there are a few out there.

| | | front wheel drive has come into it's own and oddly enough it was Chrysler Corporation that did the heavy lifting on how to make them fun. They had all those turbo Daytonas/Lasers and figured out the equal-length halfshaft idea. I'm sure someone else thought it up, but it's Chrysler that made it work. Even my Cobalt, with it's bucketloads of torque doesn't torque steer, even exiting a corner at full throttle/full boost. Honestly, though, those of us old enough to remember or own RWD drive cars still will say that RWD is waaaaaaaaay more fun. Especially if you were lucky enough to have a Fox body Mustang with the 302 under the hood... just smash the throttle and the rear end would step out and make you look good. RWD was coming back because that was what the market wanted... common thread of trucks and SUV's? Most had RWD... FWD cars were spawned from the 80's and the fear of another oil embargo, the need to lower assembly costs and time... nowadays, with manufacturing methods perfected, a RWD can be assembled in much the same manner and time as a FWD. The lynch pin on all this is fuel economy. The US Government is about to drop the hammer of CAFE and emissions... but when Hyundai is actually making a legitimate sports car with RWD, you know that the future of the fun car is sound... My question is, when will VW and Toyota jump on the bandwagon? I mean, the imagine a Corrado-type shape with a Turbo 2.0L and RWD? Or the return of a legitimate Celica or Supra? once again, we're chasing our tails and speculating... who really knows what the next couple of years will hold for the automobile... I had always wanted the SUV to die a horrible death, but not at the expense of the American auto industry.
