What RWD domestics are there now, and what has been out recently? I know a lot of them, but I was trying to find an online list but couldn't.

Pontiac G6/G8 and GTO are rwd. But the GTO is just a re-badged Holden so not sure if that counts...

Corvettes are.

CTS-V

Challenger

Camaro

not sure on much else...

the G6 is a front wheel drive "Epsilon" body.
Only the G8 and Solstice are currently manufactured as a RWD.
The GTO was based on the Holden Monaro... i don't think that is manufactured any longer.

The Ford Mustang is RWD as well.

Charger, 300C Hemi (both same platform as Challenger)

CTS, STS, DTS (I think), XLR(V), SXR, Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade

Any non 4X4 Jeep except the stupid Compass.

Ford's still making the Vickies for the Popo, so the Vickies too.

As soon as I see an Indy car, or nascar, or Blown fuel funnycar, or a Top fueler
that is front wheel drive. Thats when I'll be convinced of the superiority of frontwheel drive!

They work for mild performance applications on a very smooth or rolling hill type track, but get on a track that puts some air under the wheels, where you need to steer with the ass end of the car. That's where RWD really outshines frontwheel drive!

I have never seen a front wheel drive buggy, though I'm sure there are a few out there.

front wheel drive has come into it's own and oddly enough it was Chrysler Corporation that did the heavy lifting on how to make them fun. They had all those turbo Daytonas/Lasers and figured out the equal-length halfshaft idea. I'm sure someone else thought it up, but it's Chrysler that made it work. Even my Cobalt, with it's bucketloads of torque doesn't torque steer, even exiting a corner at full throttle/full boost.

Honestly, though, those of us old enough to remember or own RWD drive cars still will say that RWD is waaaaaaaaay more fun. Especially if you were lucky enough to have a Fox body Mustang with the 302 under the hood... just smash the throttle and the rear end would step out and make you look good. RWD was coming back because that was what the market wanted... common thread of trucks and SUV's? Most had RWD... FWD cars were spawned from the 80's and the fear of another oil embargo, the need to lower assembly costs and time... nowadays, with manufacturing methods perfected, a RWD can be assembled in much the same manner and time as a FWD. The lynch pin on all this is fuel economy. The US Government is about to drop the hammer of CAFE and emissions... but when Hyundai is actually making a legitimate sports car with RWD, you know that the future of the fun car is sound... My question is, when will VW and Toyota jump on the bandwagon? I mean, the imagine a Corrado-type shape with a Turbo 2.0L and RWD? Or the return of a legitimate Celica or Supra?

once again, we're chasing our tails and speculating... who really knows what the next couple of years will hold for the automobile... I had always wanted the SUV to die a horrible death, but not at the expense of the American auto industry.

Well at last we have somebody to blame for all of this!!!! You will have to be much more careful regarding your wishing of death on the SUV, you have single handedly screwed the whole U.S. auto industry. Good job!!!

I'll have to inform the Samurai appreciation thread of this.

Sam did you notice the antique motor in my little desert basher?

you have to remember that in 1991, the Ford Explorer really did usher in the age of the soccer mom and the Suv... overnight, performance coupes/cars were dying inglorious death to make room for these penis compensators, most of which were never driven for what they were intended.

The old shitty ones like mine are, yes. The new generation are Northstar, and LS1 powered $70.000.00 dollar monsters.

is that why Northstar V8's are so hard to get in salvage yards? I was almost thinking about an Aurora V8 instead for my Monte Carlo.

no, because you actually had to drive those... the next generation of SUV's starting with the Explorer practically drove like a Crown Victoria. That was the attraction... and then there were the faux suv's, the two wheel drive variants that assholes would put 4x4 decals on... saw those a lot in Tennessee.
