The sheer Awesomeness of this article, especially the sketches almost makes up for the fact that the article isn't a 100% accurate.

Imagine if AMC had survived the 80's or had the access to the capital that the Big Three had (and wasted). I always wondered what they would've done to modernize their car lines. A friend of mine in high school was a huge AMC nut, owning two Hornets, two Gremlins, a Pacer and and a Matador... he was heartbroken when they went tits up and were bought by Chrysler only to be hacked up and left quivering at the side of the road of history. Even though I am a GM guy, AMC always held a fascination for me. Here was a little tiny car company made up of failed car companies that did battle with these huge multi-division companies and were reasonable successful. They were an American dream and emblematic of the death of that American dream.

At this stage of the game, you have to be a pretty hardcore car guy to remember AMC, let alone name off any of their cars other than the Javelin, Pacer or AMX. I remember my friend Shawn had an AMC Spirit 3door after highschool. Had this huge displacement four cylinder in it, four wheel drive with a 4-speed stick. Had HUGE aluminum off road wheels on it and a push bar a la General Lee. It was a gutless turd but would go offroad hardcore enough to make a Subie turn red with embarasment and a Jeep go "what the fuck?"

Thanks for the link to the article. Sometimes it's nice to just dream a big dream and then let it pass with a wistful sigh. There are times when it's hard to be a car guy and 2009 is one of those times.

I live around the corner from where Ramblers, Rebels, Hornets, Gremlins, Concords, Eagles, Jeep CJ and Wranglers used to be built. Walmart bought it and turned it into a Sam's Club, it was torn down about 5 years ago, and now there is a Lowe's there.

My brother used to have a 1982 AMC Gremlin.

one of my (many) dream cars is a 1982/1983 AMC Eagle SX/4

That's because it is. You'll never feel like your closer to meeting god, than when you are driving a gremlin

My father when we lived in Wisconsin worked with a guy who worked at the AMC Kenowsha, WI plant. He was hired when Chrysler worked a deal with AMC to build M-bodies because of high demand. He worked on the line that made the 5th Avenue.

My father was amused by the fact when he talked about the plant, it was like he was in some sort of car-oriented cult where the plant was Heaven.

GM designed that engine in the 60s I believe, then sold the tooling to AMC, who then AMC sold it back to them in the 70s when GM changed the firing order around.

My dad had two AMC cars over the years. A 1968 model with a 6yl. My parents owned it for 20 years before it finally rusted away. In almost 200,000 miles it never needed any repairs except routine maintenance.

The second was a 1961 model that he bought for about $50 bucks off an old lady who did not drive anymore. I still miss that car.

Oh man, that would be great if AMC got back into the production car game. With the new Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers and Chargers, a new AMX would fit right in. I've always loved AMCs, particularly the Javelins but the funky 4WD Eagles are great too.

edit: There's one of the Eagle two-door hatchbacks in a cow field out in the middle of nowhere I know of, been there for years. Every time I stop to ask about it nobody's home though...Probably too far gone by now.
