I just watched a episode of NatGeo's "Ultimate Factories" where they documented how a Corvette is built. I had it DVR'd and got bored.

From Frame Up !

I must say, THAT IS ONE QUALITY BUILT CAR. Yes sam, I said that.

I think everyone thats a car guy should watch it.

My Favorite part was how the engines were hand assembled & stamped with pride by the employee that built it. Every employee took so much pride in there job. I hope GM bounces back. Just for these people.

Their were some quite notable innovations. I really like the tranny in the back for the "perfect" weight distribution and the dry sump oil system was effin nuts !

Quailty. I cant believe im saying it. Even they way they paint a vette was notable.

Give it a watch when it airs again and thank me later.

Porsche did that in 1976 with the 924 and 928 (And those Porsches are a SLUT to do a clutch on)

The Vette is a nice car. Well built, fast as hell, sexy. I like it, and I'm impressed with the way they're put together.

The C4 Vette? Not so nice. Kinda the white trash supercar.

i know the union folks get a bad rap, especially lately, but you take the Lordstown built cars and the Oshawa built cars and those guys actually give/gave a shit about the cars they were sending down the line. Just look at how many Luminas and Monte Carlos are still running around, all built at Oshawa. Look how many Cavaliers are running around, most built in Lordstown OH.

i worked in the plant that made the interior for the Corvette, Textron Automotive in Athens Tennessee... Corvette Cell was all by themselves, had their own manager, own quality control that was more severe than ours and the people that worked in Corvette Cell routinely went to Bowling Green to make sure that the interiors they were building were perfect.

hard to believe that the car is made by the GM that everyone slams?

pretty much any auto assembly plant is amazing, especially the logistics of JIT. all those vins on parts meeting up! I worked in IT during the winding down of ste-therese assembly. definately impressive. we were not allowed in the paint shop unless we were bonded, corporate secrets

the process was using electrostatic something or other to get the paint to bond. Camaro's and Firebirds were routinely slammed for having inferior paint, though.

I've been on a tour of the now closed GM Plant in Janesville, WI and was the greatest thing I have ever seen.

I personally think taking a factory tour is one of the greatest American/Canadian things to do...

well when it was built at ste-therese assembly they were one of the most manual plants, you would be surprised at how few robots they had!

At Janesvile, it was 50/50 I would say. You saw robots doing a lot of the major body work, but the small details were all done by people like the body to the chassis riveting.

What really got a laugh out of me was the last step before the car was fired up for testing; there was a guy who sat in a lawn chair that as the car went by at 2 MPH would tack on the door emblems.

We did a class trip 15 or 20 years ago (ish) to the Honda plant in Alliston Ontario, which was hella cool and impressive even back then.
In the early 2000's Toyota in Cambridge (TMMC) was my largest customer. i spent a ton of time in there. At the time it was Corolla and Solara being manufatured there prior to the introduction of the Matrix and Lexus lines.

i totally agree with what was said earlier. If you ever get a shot at visiting any type of automotive plant... DO IT! DO IT~! JUST DO IT NIKE tm

i remember the guy putting the gas in the car, the cars for export to the states had different gas put in them than the cars going to canada. they had real gas station type pumps at the end of the line. one labeled for a certain canadian company one named for a starry american. the nozzles were hung from a spring loaded cable.

i also remember visiting bromont in 1992 with school, they built sonatas there, it was almost entirely automated.

Win. This is the kind of thing that gives hope America will regain it's cool. When all is said and done, it's about people. People doing their thing, and keepin it real. A great reminder; everyone counts who does their job.

Wonder why that would be. I remember at Janesvile, they didn't have specific fuel for specific destinations but I do remember that one line got premium fuel and one line got regular.

Now, at the end of the line after the vehicles passed testing, I do remember there was 3 lots where vehicles were sorted based upon destination. One was for stateside, one was for Canada, and the other was everywhere else.

I do agree with you on that, but the lawn chair itself was funny. I figured a company like GM would you know give the guy a decent chair, but no it looked the guy picked up on the way to work from a garage sale.

are you on the line in Oshawa Ontario?

if they build Camaros like they built the Luminas, Monte Carlos and Impalas, they're good cars.

Oshawa I think gets the most GM's own internal awards for best quality too. I remember learning about that at Janesvile because that crew was angry they came in 2nd every year since like 1993...
