Found a used Oldsmobile at a local dealership someone in my family works at.

Bodystyle:4 door Sedan
Engine:3.5L V-6cyl
Transmission:Automatic
Ext. Color:Red
Mileage: 112,126

Has leather seats, a moon roof, a few paint chips.
Pretty much in excellent condition

Asking 3k and 3.5k after taxes

Thoughts?

If they do the registration and loan and all that for you expect to pay about $500 on top of that.

My car was listed at $8999 and it ended up being a little over 10k all said and done.

Well the car was 5.5k after taxes and they dropped it to $3.5k.

That also includes start of insurance..

run, don't walk, away from this car. You DO NOT WANT AN INTRIGUE!!!!
These cars did not get better with age. They were the last of GM's W-bodies and the first car killed when Oldsmobile heard the death knell. Their electronics are prone to failure, the engines were based on the Caddy Northstar V8, called a Shortstar, and had weird problems, most notable with timing chains, head gaskets... they just were an orphan car. What's worse is that parts for these things are a nightmare to get (body panels, wheels, trim, etc.) A friend of mine had one of these cars and it was so bad, they traded it for the first thing they could get, a Pontiac Aztek.

I am a GM W-body fan, but these things were just not what the Chevy and Pontiac cars were... if the car was a couple years newer with maybe 20,000 less miles, I'd be less leery, but the years and the miles make me nervous. If you were bent on a midsize car with a GM on it, look into the Monte Carlo, Grand Prix or Impala... better build quality and millions to cull for replacement parts.

Trust this man. I don't know why (I'm sure he will elaborate). But he is right.

I know Sam has a good opinion. This car is really solid and it is getting a full work over tomorrow for issues/check ups. Just want opinions if I should go in to it. I have till Friday to find a under 4k used car for school and back.

The guy who is helping us is the Vice President of Town and Country Ford. So ya it is odd having 8 top employees at your bidding.

a car like the Intrigue is one of those they are heavy to move. It won't get dick at an auction, so finding someone to buy it is paramount. The price tells me that they don't have anything in it and didn't give the previous owner anything for trade in. Personally, I'd keep looking. For $4k, you can get into something more mainstream and still be a larger, mid-size car. As I said, a similar vintage Monte Carlo, Lumina, Century, Regal or Grand Prix would be right in your price range. I have had two Lumina's and one MOnte Carlo (which is more or less a two door Lumina) and they have proved to be rugged, cheap to operate and, more importantly, cheap to repair.

i mean, it's your money and all, but these cars were at the tail end of Oldsmobile and probably were not assembled all that swell. Combine that and that Shortstar engine, it's just too much of a gamble for me.

there is also a ford station wagon on the lot that is decent...

If I get a car at the dealership I get a lot of money knocked off the price, the best loan/finance and top service.

what model is the Ford?
if it's a Taurus/Sable, be prepared for a weak suspension, weak transaxle and if it's the 3.8L V6, head gasket issues.

ya that one Vadder. And I hate Camaro's of that year..My dad has a undercover car like that and its a bitch to get out of.

I know the Oldsmobile has issues in that year, but this car is pretty solid. Also, any issues I have with it I can get fixed for a heavy discount...

I really want something newer but don't have the $$$

it sounds like you have your mind made up, but understand and realize that the car is an orphan and parts availability may not be there. Through no fault of the dealer, only so many parts can be stocked. In fact, my 98 Lumina was already seeing shortages in it's parts bin and that car was far from an orphan.

good luck.

Im not fully made up..just when your handed a deal its hard to walk past you know. Specially when they can cut 1.5k off the car and offer $100 month car payments with low interest... and heavy discounted maintenance service

i understand, but with a car dealer, they are not a charity.
car dealers are in it for their own ends. The Intrigue is a car that's hard to unload.
Kelley Blue Book retail on that car is $4585, so they're definitely trying to unload it fast.

the way it works is you pick out what you want. Then the manager goes with the "papers" to the VP. The VP calls you into his office and whispers /writes down a new number and you sit down and talk about family stuff. He then says he will offer the car for this price once the manager does the "work" and then he calls in the finance/credit managers for the fun part. I have a photo of the 5 people working on my stuff..

Examples:
My uncle van retails for 35k..he got it for 20k...my moms car was 16k we got it for 8k with $200 a month payments.
My aunt gets a new car for free every year
