She gives great advice, such as "pulling the ABS fuse if you don't like the feel", which is an AWESOME way to turn on a shitload of warning lights, disable your traction control, stability control, automatic 4WD, and even put the tranny into limp mode on some vehicles.

I'll take Travis Pastrana's instruction

Yeah, her advice was just dangerous. The ABS thing I have heard before. When I was in HS and for some werid safety week we had, we had a guest speaker from some weird driver safety school who came in to give us some driving advice.

He mentioned pulling the ABS fuse of course and the minute he said that, 4 other students including myself and also the teacher raised their hand. He let the teacher go first and he said "Umm...but on my Malibu, the ABS fuse takes out other systems" The speaker turned white faced then goes "Well, I'm sure they are not important systems." which of course the teacher goes "Well, I guess POWER STEERING and TRACTION CONTROL are not important."

Well, there is a difference between you doing it when you know your car and then this lady who gives out advice like that with the audience she has.

I have no preference in ABS; I can work with either to get me moving.

'98-'06 (ish) GM full size trucks have an issue where rust scale builds up under the front wheel speed sensors, and creates a larger air gap... you'll try to come to a stop at low speeds (ie, pulling into a parking space), the pedal goes to the FLOOR, the ABS pump goes crazy, and you DON'T stop. It's pretty exciting.

The first time I had a truck do it to me was my first day at the GM dealership... just about put the fucking thing through a wall. Parking sprag worked very well in that truck

Are you sure '95 isn't included in that? My GMC K1500 pickup does that, but the pedal doesn't go to the floor. Every time I roll up to a stop sign, parking spot, drive thru, etc. the ABS pump loses it. And you don't stop. It sounds like I'm running over a mating yak whenever I try to stop the damn thing...

What's the fix? I assumed it was the ABS control module.

It may have been an issue on the earlier trucks, I haven't seen it yet, but who knows, right?


Just pop the abs sensors out of the front hub, grind the rust off the mounting surface and re-install. It's a very simple fix, as long as the sensor doesn't break off.

Eh I guess its personal preference. I hate ABS. On ice it can be a best friend or worse enemy. In snow it simply pisses me off. And if you off road like I do then its down right deadly.

anti-lock brake sensors take an awful beating here... local road crews put old tailings on the roads during winter. these are iron ore tailings and after awhile, they make the sensors go apeshit.

it takes the skill out of learning to drive on slippery roads... oh, the ABS will just stop me... yeah, as you careen through another car, two road signs, a parked car and come to rest in a guard rail while the ABS is doing it's best to sort of stop you.

Sam keep in mind that many times we are talking to a generation of drivers who have never driven without cup holders, much less ABS. Everyone should be issued a 83 Olds Cutless 4 door with a anemic 305 and 1/2 tread tires. Make em run it for a year in the winter in the north. Then they may have some basic driving skills.
