You done good To get a decent vehicle for 950.00 is impressive enough, but to get a rugged rust free Jeep that can go anywhere anytime, and parts are cheap, and the cult thing, (after market parts, meets etc.) I've had 3 Cheros, liked them all.

When I was 14 I learned to drive on my Uncles '47 Willys. Second gear would always pop out, not good for steep downhills, but we had a lot of fun on their farm. They should teach double clutching in drivers ed, a special course for geeks who like low tech. Happy Trails.

Also need to get the AC working; the system is charged, but no cold air out so I think I need to look at the thermostat.

Thermostat won't affect your a/c at all.

Make sure your compressor is cycling. Try powering up the compressor coil.

I'll take a look at doing that tomorrow. My father wants me to put in another can of R134a but he's nuts as its already at the right pressure.

If the comp isn't cycling the pressure could be low, try also bypassing the relay with a paper clip to turn on the compressor and then check the pressure. Or, just stick a window unit in the hatch, either way .

Pressure checks out fine at 45 PSI when I looked at it today.

Looking at your pics, I think that grill is off a 90 or earlier model. And not off an SE at all.

I am pathetic.

Its worth it if you have to take it apart very much. The older ones are a pain in the ass.

Yesterday, I decided to do the emissions test on my car. I failed because my Hydrocarbons were though the roof (2156 HC; the Oregon standard is 220). So I did some basic troubleshooting and found out I HAD NO THERMOSTAT INSTALLED. WTF? So $4.00 later and I had a thermostat installed.

that sets off alarms... in most cases, the thermostat is removed to alleviate some other cooling system/engine malady such as a headgasket. Be wary, young Jedi.

Don't sweat just yet. Often its removed because folks don't know how to fill XJs properly. If you don't remove the upper radiator hose it will create an air pocket that once it hits the water pump, will make it run hot. Often idiots will pull the stat to solve the problem. And in doin so eventually kill the cat due to it runnin cool all the time and dumping unburned fuel into it.

Thats what exactly what my father said! And I will do the emissions test again on Tuesday. I think it should solve the problem.

Update:

Did emissions again; my HC level only dropped 50. I had my father help me out today with testing out more stuff. We are pretty sure its an fuel system problem; we think the valves are not closing so its pushing the engine rich all the time. We are going to remove and check the valves tomorrow.

Also, my MPG on the first fillup was 11.2; which is low for XJ of any vintage.
