| | | My pops bought a 914-4 in 1970 right from the factory. He drove it 30 miles and told them to come pick the piece of shit up. They sent a rep out to see what the issue was, my pop said it was the slowest car he'd ever driven, and that it would not make it up hill from a stop. The rep asked dad to show him the problem............Seems my pop was starting out in third gear.............He ended up keeping the car, driving it thru europe, shipping it home to the U.S. Where it was driven daily up into the early 90's. It was sold for $1400.00, and had 60,000 miles on it.

| | | Bandi nailed it. They had reverse where first usually is. Somewhere in the owners manual, on the dash or gear shift knob, would have likely been the shift pattern. First they had a 1.7 litre, then 1.8, then 2.0. Maybe even a 1.9 for a couple of weeks. (I did no Googling for this rant) The more rare 6 cylinder was more than 2 litres, I'm quite sure. Excellent design and handling, but the styling or something didn't make for a big seller. Unfortunately, they are expensive to restore and keep running. The marketing by VW in North America was brilliant. In Europe, they were called the VW Porsche. In 1972, the bus went from an upright classic 1.6, to the pancake 'Porsche engine' dual carb 1.7. The same engine that was in the 914! It was not a Porsche engine. The bus of course got the same upgrades, but not the 6 cylinder, which was a real Porsche engine. Guess which vehicle with the same engine was faster? Reminds me of the time coming back from skiing in my 74 VW 181, right beside a friend in her 60's Ghia, she had the 1500, but passed me at 3 mph. Aerodynamics, they matter.
