i have one of their albums... that shit was in style LONG before you were hatched, meathead.
The Fiero is really one of the neater expressions of platform/parts bin engineering... the ass was an A/X-body, front suspension hardware was T-body, seats were F-body... and it was stiffer than a full-size car of the period.

It was a shame that GM shitcanned the car after they got all the bugs worked out of it with the 88 model year.
by todays standards, the V6 is kind of pokey, but the cars handle so well, even by todays conventions. my friend Ray had an 87 GT V6 (sold it during his divorce) and even though it didn't have the grunt, you could just attack a twisty road fearlessly.

There are a few good ones; Pontiac dealers had 308 rebody option called the MERA for 87 and 88.

Samurai Why did they stop production of the Fiero?

well, depends on who you talk to or what urban legend you subscribe to. The biggest legend is that GM saw that the Fiero was taking sales away from the Corvette as an actual two-seat sports car (rather than the two seater commuter that the car had originally been envisioned as). In 1988, the Fiero had gotten its own suspension and the 60-degree was really starting to deliver fun...

the other legend is that GM was losing money on the cars and that it cost more to build them than say a Sunbird or Firebird, both cars delivered more power, but nowhere near the grin-meter.

fun comparo to the defunct Solstice taken from GM Inside News a couple of years ago:

What does the Solstice and Fiero have in common?
Here is what they share

2 seats

shared parts from other GM products. Yes the Solstice has parts from Hummer, GMC, GP, Caddy, and other parts but they are all good items.

Mid engine and near or at 50/50 balance. yes the Solsticve is a mid engine with the engine set back behind the front wheels.

The same mission to bring people into Pontiac show rooms and help sell more product. The Fiero helped sell a lot of Grand Am's and the hope is the Solstice will help sell G 6's.

Pontiac wanted both cars badly.

The major differeance between the two are that GM did not want the Fiero and canceled it a few times before it was built Then Pontiac lied to get the go ahead and said it was a commuter car just to get approval. Pontiac never considered it a commuter car and the 50 MPG high mileage package they sold to GM mangment never made the market.

GM under funded the car and did not give it the best choice of parts or engines it needed.

Pontiac in 1988 built what they wanted and intended in the first place in 1984 but were never given the funds to build in the first place.

The Fiero is a car GM should have better funded and Pontiac rolled the dice on to see if they could keep it alive till they could get what they wanted or needed. When the GM 80 program was canceled it was the final nail in the coffin. Chevy loved to point out the plants lack of profit per unit as it could not afford to lose any Vette sales with the Vette being on the bubble each year. They saw the DOHC V6 1990 GTP Fiero as a threat at a much lower cost.

The Fiero never came with a Quad 4 as it was set for the base car in 1990 that never made production.

Rising insurance costs, and GM's excuse was they didn't see a future market for a 2-seater... yet the Reatta came out, and the imports were hot sellers (Miata, CRX, MR2, delSol *shudders*, etc.)

Wildest legend I heard was because GM needed a minivan; hence the space-frame design integrated into the Trans-Sport.

1990 next-gen Fiero would've been wicked-awesome... top one was a 2+2 prototype that later received a fastback before being auctioned a year or so ago. Second and third would've been the coupe/Formula. Fourth/fifth would've been the GTP.
