I have to say i like the styling of the ranger over the GM twins.

For now, I'd say go with the Ranger; Ford still has this segment of the market covered...for now.

Does it have to be new? Or newer? 90's 'yotas and Nissans were pretty damn solid trucks and reliable as gravity.

Ranger,
the old toyotas are great mechanically, but who wants to replace the bodies every other year?
i have owned a few and love them to death, but not if it needs to stay looking good and rust free

with a Ranger, go with the 4.0L V6. One thing to watch out for with the Ranger is the manual transmission. With some miles, they get funky. I had one fail on me going down the Northway. Had to drive 40 miles in 4th gear cuz that's all it had.

My operator has a 2005 Ranger and has had no problems with it. Later Colorados/Canyons aren't that bad, but they're still not sweetness and light. Another overlooked pickup is the Nissan Frontier. Toyota's really don't rot that bad anymore...

since ive owned 6 cars all of which were GMs im a little scared of the blue oval, but i like the fact the ranger is an old forgotten design, been looking the interchange manuals, the ranger dates to the early 80s, gm on thier compact trucks keep changing designs and the canyon/colarado are pretty ugly.

and well if mazda is selling rangers too, must be good

Well, the Colorado isn't bad, but its not the same as previous generations of Chevy small trucks...

As for Mopar, there's going to be a new small truck in 2012 and its going to be a under the Jeep name. Its going to be the replacement for Dakota and I am going to tell you, its going to start taking away the Ranger market share...

Ranger.

Colorado is a flaming piece of shit. Badly engineered Isuzu junk. Same price as a full size truck. VERY expensive to fix. Yeah, let's mount the brake rotors inboard to the bearing assembly, thus resulting in $800 front brake jobs. Drives like a Tempo, but with less power. The cylinder head on the 4 and 5 cylinder engines tends to warp, the timing chains are weak, the 4 wheel drive system is shit, if the centre joint on the driveshaft fails, you need a new driveshaft ($1400), and it will fail.

The Ranger may be obsolete, but it's sure as hell been proven.

If you've worked on cars from the 80's, you'll be just fine! Most of the components haven't changed... and they just seem to work.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it has issues, but I was trying to say, it doesn't live up to the S-10 and what not.

I don't know much about GM's Engineering team as much as I know about Chrysler's but it looks like the normal group that does sedan platforms took the Isuzu DMAX trucks and converted them for North America. The Isuzu DMAX trucks are actually pretty nice so I dunno what the heck GM is thinking with it.

Even getting them in for PDIs we were having issues with boxes not being bolted on, loose suspension parts, connectors not plugged in... they just seem to be pretty carelessly assembled.

I bet the Isuzu version is a diesel overseas though... that'd be neat.

actually, it's the other way around... the Ranger came first.
The first Rangers were powered by the 2.0L, 2.3L and 2.8L V6 all lifted from (Gasp) the Ford Pinto, Capri, and Mustang II. (There was a diesel option in there too that was sourced from Mazda, but I'm too lazy to wiki it).

another option with a Ranger is finding a Mazda B-series of similar vintage... they're cheaper than the Ranger, but are the same truck.
