Download MS Virtual PC - install it - setup a 32MB P200 as a virtual PC - install windows 95 - play away. That's how I play it. I love that game.

Sorry, that's pretty over simplified - it took me a few hours to get it to work right. VirtualPC kicks ass for this sort of thing though.

XP Home shouldn't be a problem for it - but you can always install XP Pro- once you get virtual PC installed it will walk you through configuring a virtual pc - you can give it access to drives and such on your PC - once the virtual pc is built you should be able to install Win98 or whatever from a drive on your system. I know it's a bit confusing but it should work.

I've got a computer I'm playing with some, and I haven't done any work with drives for a while, I just want to confirm this - if I have two IDE buses (right termainology, right?) each needs it's own master, right?

You should have 2 IDE controllers (on standard PC2000 spec systems) - each one has a master and a slave for a total of 4 devices.

They are usually referred to as Primary (supposed to be color coded blue on standard PC2000 spec systems) and Secondary (Black on PC2000 Spec systems).

If you are dealing with a generic ATX motherboard it should be PC2000 spec - if you are dealing with dell/gateway/compaq stuff lord have mercy on your soul - they opted out of the PC spec program back in 2002 so they may only have a single controller and the color coding may not be standard - you'll have to find their user manuals to figure out what is what if it's not labaled legibly on the board itself.

FYI - I actually wrote a chunk of the pc2000 spec when I worked for HP...

I have a compaq for testing operating systems i had to instal a new HDD omg all the connecters are black on the IDE cable.Your wouldnt know witch is master or slave. Then they throw in a cable for a floppy drive that only supports one. Compaq sucks cases are way to small to work in too.

O.k., controller, not bus. I know which one is which, and that is all good and fine. Anybody know if there are settings for a jumper on a hard drive (to select slave/master/cable select) which are kind of standard? I have 4 spots for it, and I am assuming one is just for storing the jumper/an extra. If anybody knows which spot (closest to ide cable=... closest to power=..., etc.) generally has which setting, that would be helpfull.

Thanks

varies by manufacturer actually - It should be labeled on the drive - the 3 jumpers you have are probably Cable Select - Master - Slave. Leaving the jumnper off entirely usually makes it cable select.

Just go to the manufacturers site - look it up by part number.

I know how bad those compaq cases can be - I gutted a case once and mounted everything in a big blob of electical insulation foam. It looked like a big giant poo with computer bits sticking out of it - I'll see if I still have the pictures somewhere.

Best Compaq I ever owned - 486/66 32MB RAM - 1MB VLB Video 120MB Hard Drive - no sound... 28k modem - looked like a giant poo...Those were the days.

My new HDD i just got segate 120gig IDE had "cable select, slave, master, limiter(limits the HDD to around 36gigs for lagecy bios and such)". I put it in my compaq witch had lagacy bios so i could only use 36gb.

Need help formatting a drive in Win98.

I put in a 8 gig HD, mac formatted, it shows up in windows, but will not allow me to format it, because windows says it doesnt have enough memory avalible, when I try and do it in dos, I have no luck - dos doesnt seem to recognize it. I cant get it to show up in fdisk, except if windows is running while dos is, and I cannot format it still under either windows or dos.

Advice?

It's an existing install - not a new OS. I haven't had any luck, I will probobly just throw it in a mac and format it for pc, and then put it back in my pc.
