I have an IPAQ Pocket PC I use for an MP3 Player. Ipods are cool, but how are they any different from any other MP3 player?

They have status attached to them! Basically, if you walk around with those tacky white earphones, it not only signals that you are able to spend hundreds of dollars on an (admittedly high-quality) MP3 player, it also means that you're part of an elite club of people who enjoy music and who want only the best when they experience aural pleasure.

Or something like that...

hahahahaha, elite club.

Meh, I don't even use the ear buds; they sound like shit. I use my Sony V700.

I picked an iPod because of it's size (both physical and hard drive). I listen to music everywhere I go and size and lightness was something important for me. It's also really built solid. I can run or jog or bike with it. I also use it as a portable hard drive, the Firewire was a plus for me and it just looks cool. And they sound sound really really good with the right headphones like the Sony 7506.

How so? Functionality wise, of course, an iPaq is a PDA. An iPod is just an MP3 player. Sound quality wise, I wouldn't bet on it.

Well, while an IPAQ has less storage than a Ipod, I have a color screen, MP3 Player, video player, Internet access, Its pretty much a computer the size of my palm. And sound quality? Once again, I whoop its ass. I can choose the space/quality ratio when I upload stuff on it. I have a windows media player 5 setting equalizer, and my Ipaq audio controls also let me adjust quality. And unlike an Ipod, I have a built in speaker with such good quality, it sounds like its coming from a professional stereo.

The war is on!

First off, lets compare oranges to oranges. Not appels to oranges. A PDA is totally different than an mp3 player. Let's just compare the MP3 player part of a PDA to an iPod. No videos. No internet. Just MP3.

But, the videos and color screen are useless on an iPod or just about any MP3 player. It's an MP3 player. No need for internet acess or videos on a MP3 player. If I want to watch videos or go on the net, I can use my laptop.

I'm ready to bet that an iPod has better sound quality. It's an MP3 player and Apple designed it's own sound card/amplifier. A PDA is built to do all sorts of things so I'm sure Compaq didn't put all of it's focus on a dedicated hi-end sound card like Apple did. If you use crappy ear buds, it isin't a real test. Try a real pair of cans like the Sony 7506. An iPod will drive them much better and the sound will be much more clear and powerful. As for the built in speaker, why the hell would you want one. It not loud and when it gets loud, it sounds all distorted and like shit. I use my iPod on the bus, while walking are biking or whenever I'm not home and use headphones cause it's clearer and louder. Fuck using speakers when being mobile.

As for the EQ, the iPod also has one. If you set the EQ's flat on both machines in question, the iPod will probably also win. If you have to use the EQ, it's because your thing sounds like shit. All music is EQ'd properly in thw studio so you won't have to adjust it. I can also set the quality to my taste.

I've used the Sony Clie things, the iPaq and the Dell Axon and they all sucked when tested with real headphones.

Well, I have real headphones, I dont use earbuds, and Last time I checked, thats what a cheap-ass Ipod has. Second of all, I get my shit off kazaa, so it isn't always the best quality. When I rip Cds and play them back, the quality is way better than an Ipod. And as for that dinky-assed sound card they made? Compaq Designed their sound card along with Intel and Microsoft. And the speaker is clear as shit, and loud as hell. It doesn't sound remotely distorted. I only use it for tokin' and stuff with friends at school. I also have the same pre-set settings on the equalizer, so I can set my music to my desired taste without adjusting a damn thing. And I can watch visualizations on the color screen. So in short, yeah, Ipods still suck ass.

but the cool thing is they can hold up to forty gigabites of anything so it's like a giant DVD that can play music

Well, first of all, Intel and Microsoft don`t make soundcards so how could they design one? You say you have real headphones, I`m just curious and would like to know the model. You can watch visualizations, good for you but why the fuck would I want to watch retarded circles and bars move around. It`s a battery drainer for one and boring to look at.

I want to listen to my music, not waste my batteres looking at half ass visualizations or videos.

Finally, an iPod dosn't suck ass. It`s different than a PDA and I would think a lot better.

Beleive what you want, i`m sick of trying to proove my point.

Have a great day!

Battery Drainer my ass, it lasts 8 hours with the screen on, and backlight on, while listening to MP3s or doing whatever or both. And yes, intel does design sound cards. They also design computer motherboards like the one installed in my computer right now. So yeah, Ipods do suck ass. As for this debate, I'm finished.
-SnArF
P.S. Those headphones are sonys, they came with my CD player. I would like a pair of those larger ones, but I think its alot of money to pay for headphones and all. Could anybody reccomend a good pair?

For a good pair of headphones you might want to check out this forum. It's quite useful and has a lot of reviews.

http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=2

I really like the Sony 7506 but those are professional studio headphones and aren't great for "on the road". They sell for about 99$ I think.

For good sound and compactness, check out the Sennheiser MX500's or the 400's, Only real difference is the 400's dont have the inline volume control. They are right unger 20$ US.

BTW: Intel don't make soundcards. I have 2 Intel Motherboards and they use Yamaha or Creative Lab soundcards.

Those are nice, but 99$ is a lot for headphones. Quality is cool and all, but thats a little steep. I like those MX550's though, I'll have to look in to that.
-SnArF
P.S. The whole circuit board on the PDA is made by intel, in cooperation with Compaq Audio, thats who made it and shit.

No worrrys PC, the new ipods have a different type of battery and dont get fucked up like the Generation 1 and 2 ipods. I have a Generation 2 ipod and the battery is shit, but i got it for free so it doesent matter. BTW snarf, the ipod battery lasts 16 hours, has games, and a place for addresses etc. You can get other programs to load onto it to make it a PDA of sorts.

Don't worry, I'm not worrying! I love my iPod to death and I will probably upgrade my 3G to the new 4G.
