a friend of mine's stepbrother borrowed his mother's Alliance one night... it turned out to be the last night on earth for that car. We beat that car so hard it never ran again. Rolled it over twice, ripped the exhaust right off the manifold going over a jeep trail at 70mph. We were so exquisitely pickled, we shouldn't have even been driving a sofa! Anyways, Harvey slid the car through an intersection, flipped it over into a swamp, managed to get it out only to stuff a rock into the tranny pan and that was it. The Rebel Alliance crept into an innocuous parking lot around the corner from my friends house and sat there for two weeks while Harvey thought up a good story to tell his mom. There wasn't a straight panel left on it... was a window left in it. The engine would start and run, but was knocking harder than the FBI with a search warrant. The gas tank was secured with a pair of underwear and dog chain... it was a glorious evening made all the better by the fact that (snicker snicker) it wasn't my car.

"The engine would start and run, but was knocking harder than the FBI with a search warrant". This is brilliant writing... makes me think of Sgt. Joe Friday or some of those noir films from the 40's.

That amazing rugged little car protected you and your friends despite the shocking adolescent mad abuse doled upon it. One day I'll tell about getting my parents '70 VW Bus airborne on a gravel road. Friend said there was enough height he could have crouched under it and had headroom...

Cool, I do a bit of scribbling myself. Am thankful to have survived those often crazy, but character building teenage and early 20's years.

...like having your friend pull the e-brake in your car going 65mph on a snowy road in the middle of nowhere 'just to see what would happen'?

I did a low impact version of that to a friend. Had his Mom's 72 British Ford Cortina wagon; I slowly eased the brake on, he accelerated to compensate, didn't know wtf for a minute. He wasn't amused but I was. Minor stuff. E brake at 65 in the snow calls for vid cam on the dash to record the excitement. But you've got the memory, even better.

That was a weird-ass book. Even by Stephen King standards.

More like disturbing. Seriously disturbing. Like buried bodies in Jersey pine barrens disturbing.
