| | | I think you people (and many other forums) put too much of an emphasis on spelling, grammar, and even someone's prefered word arrangement. I don't think any of that has any sort of correllation with one's intelligence. Hell, I visit forums on astrophysics and I've seen some very horrible writing. Just take a look at how the people talk on Michio Kaku's (he's a reknowned theoritical astrophysicist) forums. If I had things my way, no one would use multiple punctuation marks at the end of sentences like you did, Servo.
rather hard to read you know???? |
Imagine you saw Einstein, it'd be wrong of you to make assumptions about his intelligence just because he was heavily disheveled and didn't wear socks. Also, you're wrong about your assertion that just because he's from NYC, he's a native English speaker. NYC has historically been the place where immigrants move in, and immigrants probably outnumber natives here.

That man also didn't know how to tie his shoes. But I do agree, lots of people do worry about spelling too much. But now you are generalizing. I don't care about spelling. I will make it an issue if someone tries to talk shit about my spelling when theirs is wrong, then they get hit in the face with it. I have a VERY high IQ, I am considered gifted. I suck with run on sentances and spelling errors left and right. Hey what can I say, I never end a thought, and my mind keeps going, so do my sentances lol

If he was telling the truth how about he reveals the super industrial area and I can call one of my friends in Manhattan to go chek it out. and btw, if the dead guy has no eyes i'm guessing the rest of his face was probably a little fucked up too. But you know those eyeless polish people.... and yes, no more stories of dead bodies on the forums. We can't afford to have upset people demonizing UE any more.

Oh cry me a fucking river. If you type like that, yes, people assume you're an idiot, because there's only a few reasons people would type like that: - They are an idiot. - They are too lazy to do better. - They are a skiddie, lazy, and an idiot. - They have broken punctuation and shift keys. And in any case I don't care. Plus, he seems to be a native speaker to me. How did I get sucked into this argument anyway? Ack! [last edit 9/14/2004 10:08 PM by Servo - edited 2 times]

| | | Yes, yes, those are all valid points, but some people are conditioned to typing that way. I don't like it when people use "u", multiple exclamation points and question marks, and shiz like that, but I don't whine about it. Fortunately I never learned to type like that.

| | | Posted by vala Speaking of really drunk, this thread brought 2 things to mind: 1) why is it that when people post really, really, really lame & unbelievable stories that they've made up, their rebuttals- without fail- have the worst spelling and grammar of any posts on UER. just to make this clear for everyone....english may not be the first language for everyone on uer, take me for example, i speak and write french all day, it doesn't make me stupid uneducated, uncredible, still in grade school or something because i make grammar or spelling mistakes.
|
Vala, your eloquence in what is a second language for you only furthers my point. There's a noticeable difference between someone struggling with second language and someone struggling with their keyboard as they crap themselves trying to come up with a response to people pointing out their BS. People posting in a second language tend to make reasonably understandable and coherent posts. People crapping themselves tend to write in in capitol letters a lot, ramble, and spend much of their typing effort on name-calling. Very different, stylistically speaking. And I stick by my statement... I'm not remotely trying to imply all posters who make grammatical or spelling errors are lame. Just that the lamest of the bunch tend to fall into the same bottom-of-the-barrel level of writing when they post freaked-out responses. um...Vince edit: Typo... LOL! It must have been my freaked out rush to reply. ;) [last edit 9/14/2004 11:31 PM by um...Vince - edited 1 times]

You're absolutely right.. its easy to tell a non fluent english speaker from a 14 year old who just doesn't care enough to type out a coherent thought. Unless maybe your native language is one composed of miscapitalized run on sentences with poor punctuation and worse spelling. Caput_58

| | | Hey nycexposed, read my post. You got really pissed. But consider this.... The story you posted was really extrordinary. Surely, if you took a minute to think about it, you would be able to see that it might be hard for people to believe. Agreed? Don't get all mad again, just read. I would never doubt that you're out there explorin' all kinds of shit, but this one's just a little tough to take in. If you still swear that it's true, then all you have to do is go back there (in broad daylight) and take pictures of this damn place. And if this is the kind of shit that happens to you everytime you go exploring, then I suggest you get a safer hobby. If you can't generate any proof, then lets all just drop the whole thing and move on. And keep it in the back of your mind that your more down to earth adventures, pictures, questions, etc. are welcome here along with being civil, but don't try and play yourself up to some of the worlds most experienced Explorers (I'm not even close to talking about myself). Either way, perhaps this thread should be shut down, it is in no way productive, and shouldn't be allowed to cause any damage. Why don't you post some pics of the last abandoned place you were at?

And the NYPD would NEVER investigate what happened after coming across a bunch of little kids naked and beaten in the middle of some industrial street (please - we're talking about a police force with around 35k officers, larger than the armies of some countries. Cops here for the most part don't encounter anything this wild during a day of work, a week of work, or even a month - certainly nothing even close to kids naked & beaten. That sounds more once in a lifetime than anything else.) Nor would they call a bus and get them to the nearest trauma hospital and run a rape kit. And the local media would NEVER rush to the scene after some freelancers and stringers hear the PD radio chatter and calls for level one mobilization, ESU, etc concerning the situatiuon. I can see the NY Post headline now: BLOODY PRE TEEN BODIES ON BROOKLYN STREET.
|
You never know, in detroit durring the early 90s the police didn't do a single fucking thing when they got called b/c of a boy staggering around naked bleeding out of his ass with a hole in his head. And he turned out to be a Dahmer victim. http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/crime/serial-killers/jeffrey-dahmer/

Shit like that does happen, especially in NYC. And about all the spelling and grammar "why is it that when people post really, really, really lame & unbelievable stories that they've made up, their rebuttals- without fail- have the worst spelling and grammar of any posts on UER." Speaking from personal experience people when people get angry or upset they tend to hurry and become irrational. If his story was true and he was upset about people not believing him he probably gave a hurried response, hence the errors.

Actually, that was here in good ol' Milwaukee. Apparently, a cop seeing me sitting on the porch of my apartment building is enough reason to pull over, ask me if I'm selling drugs, run my ID, etc. but a naked, incoherent, rectally bleeding teenage boy stumbling through an alley is no cause for alarm... | | | If I can just drop in a note here about people's terrible spelling. I don't think it's an issue of stupidity alot of the time. It's a respect thing. People should type well because they respect the people who are reading their posts. By not giving a damn about what you write, it just shows you don't give a damn about the people who are reading it. So why should they give a damn about what you have to say? That's just my take on things. I write well, because I value what I am trying to say and want other people to read and understand what it is I am telling them. Because I respect them. -Flock

| | | I dunno, I think that language and words should be more free from rules. It allows the language to be more of a living thing when everyone types there own way. Hell, thats the only way new words become popular, by common people just talking how they feel, not necessarily how they taught. Post full of blatent mispellings and annoying slang. I use 'dunno' and 'tho' alot, so I have patience for other people like me, but when whole paragraphs are just shortened words, it gets lame. Not annoying so much as entertaining though.

Please, plug the IV back in. You really need those nutrients. 3) A watch, a camera, and all that extra space up your ass. Pretty impressive. Can I rent room for my car? I heard parking's a bitch in NYC. 4) Cops didn't care? That could have been their career highlight!!! Medals and media shots galore! 5) 7 - The number of bong hits he took before writing that story en route to the bus terminal at 12 midnight. Not bad. Seriously. LOL....

and you know this because you're from....west...virginia? This view that NYC is a chaotic battleground of mutants and rich people needs to stop watching made for TV movies. Fact is whether you like them or not, bloomberg and guliani cracked the fuck down on Ny so there's no doubt in my mind that if a cop saw a group of kids walking naked telling crazy stories they'd at least check it out, let alone detain them for questioning. The reason the cops didn't get dahmer's zombie lover is because dahmer "made the save" and convinced the cops nothing was wrong.
