I am a strong believer for traveling lightly. I don't like to carry a backpack unless I am going to have to bring additional specialized tools or supplies, such as rope or water for long trips. Here is my "core" package:

- Leatherman Charge XTi (Greatest multitool ever! - I recommend it to everyone although it is pretty pricey ($124.99 MSRP)

- 2D Maglite (Planning on upgrading soon to a nicer LED light... thinking about Inova X5)

- Byrd Cara-Cara Folding Pocket Knife - High quality stainless steel 3 15/16" folding knife for under $25. Great for doing things that you wouldn't want to use a $100+ knife for

- Cell Phone (You never know when you might need it, but make sure to keep it's ringer off)

- Small keychain LED backup light (Just incase something bad happens to my maglite)

- Extra batteries

As you can see, I don't bring a whole lot. If it can't fit in my pocket or hang off my belt, it's better off left at home, in my opinion. Having a large or heavy backpack or satchel is not something I want to have to deal with on my trips.

I wouldn't recommend the X5 if you're buying now. It was a decent light a few years ago. I had the first gen, and currently own the second gen, and they have been allright. The problem is they use 10mm non focussed LED's. The newer styles with focussed luxeon LED's are much better. If unbreakability is not of 100% importance to you I'd suggest the ministar (think that's the name) LED drop in for the mini-mag. Plenty bright and uses AA batteries. Some of the CR123 powered lights will be much brighter, but you lose run-time. Check out flashlightreviews.com

So the Inova X5 isn't a very good buy right now? What about the Inova T2? It uses Luxeon LEDs, has a 5 hour battery life, outputs about 25 lumens. Has anyone had any experience with this flashlight?

Haven't tried it, but last I looked it was pretty expensive.

For about $35 you can get a mini mag plus the drop in. It puts out 25 lumens and also lasts 5-7 hours, but on AA's. You can go with the drop in that fits both the 2AA mag and 2AAA. It puts out 20 lumens, but supposedly for 18 hours in the AA mag.

I was looking into the T2 and it looks like a good light, but all the Luxeon Inovas are bigger, especially at the head. The spot pattern is nice though. A good center, but retains it's flood effect as well.

Again, if durability is an issue, the Inovas perform well. I've used both my X5's as dive lights and also dropped them repeatedly. One of them developed a corosion problem internally, but that's what warranties are for.

Durability is definitely a top priority for me. That's why I'm looking to replace my current maglite with a more durable LED, and also why I'm hesitant to get another maglite as a replacement. I like to make sure all of my equipment is capable of taking a beating - that is why when I am taking pictures I will go out and buy a disposable camera rather than take my digital camera.

Then you might want to look into a surefire or stream light. My experience with both has been good. Both companies make lights that will match the quality of the Inova. It will help expand your field a bit.

I've looked into Surefire, but they seem to be a bit too expensive for my liking. I think the Inova T2 is the way to go, in my case. It's small (weighs about a fifth of what my current maglite weights, and is a bit more than half as long), it outputs 40 lumens (I was wrong when I said 25 before), and it seems to be pretty durable and water proof. It might be a bit more expensive than a maglite, but I think it's worth it.

Yeah, I thought 25 seemed a bit low for that. It's been a while since I researched these things. What is it running for cost now?

I've used a Leatherman before, and thought it was okay. However, my dad bought me a Gerber for Christmas and I love it. Any thoughts on Gerber v. Leatherman?

For the T2 you should probably expect to pay about $50. I searched around a lot of sites and the lowest I found was $44.95 before shipping.

I've used a Gerber multitool once before, along with numerous Gerber blades. I have to say, I was impressed with their high quality blades, but felt that their multitool wasn't all that it could be. When I was looking to purchase a multitool, I considered Gerber, but after handling both a Gerber and a Leatherman I decided to spend the extra bit of money and get a Leatherman.

Victorinox Swiss Tool > Leatherman or Gerber

Agreed, whole heartedly. I used to bring both my pocket knife and a multi-tool with me, but I realized I never used the multi-tool. The only downside is the weight, it's definitely heavier than my multi-tool.

Victorinox Swiss Tool > Leatherman or Gerber

After carrying several different Swiss Army Knives for countless years, I finally decided to go ahead and buy a Leatherman multitool. I don't understand how you can say the Swiss tool is better than a Leatherman... in my opinion, the Leatherman is far superior to Swiss tools in every way imaginable. The only thing I can think of that might make a Swiss tool more favorable than a Leatherman is the weight.

Swiss Tool, NOT Swiss Army Knife----$35 on ebay, better features and tougher than a Leatherman or Gerber. The Sypderco Spyderench is also great quality, but more expensive and of a different breed.

I'm still not seeing how the Swiss Tool is better. You say it has better features. What features are those? I looked at one on ebay for $41.99, but it didn't seem to have any features that the Charge XTi doesnt. However, the Swiss Tool was made out of Steel, versus Titanium, and was missing some essential tools such as a changable bit driver, and a blade made from higher quality materials than just 440C (Leatherman has started using 154CM blades). Oh well, I guess it's just a matter of preference. I was just curious to see if maybe I could have added another tool to my arsenal, but I haven't been convinced.

I guess I haven't owned a newer Gerber, mine was a few years old, but the Swis Tool has dominated every Gerber or Leatherman I've compared it with. It just holds up better. The wire cutters won't dent. The blade stays sharper. It come with a practically indestructable crate opener. I've popped HUGE manhole covers with the crate opener. In the same situations most of the tools I've seen would not hold up. Everybody I know seems to have a leatherman wave or something similar. They just don't seem to hold up as well.

Also, for a few bucks more you can get it with a set of bits.

I'll have to look into the Charge XTi. I have been so satisfied with my Swiss tool (and the one before it) that I haven't bothered looking at any of the ones to come out in the last year or two. God knows I love good steel though. Bought a benchmade for just that reason.

If you want good materials and a driver set, check out the Spyderench.

If you like good steel, look into the Charge XTi or Ti. You said that the Swiss Tool blade holds it's edge better... I have to disagree there. The Charges use 154CM as I pointed out, which holds its edge several times better than the steel the Swiss Tool uses. Perhaps the Swiss Tool can hold its own vs the Leatherman Waves you are speaking about, but the new Charge blows the Waves out of the water as well. (No pun intended)
