How close can you go?
| | Re: What's in yer pack? <Reply # 40 on 4/7/2005 4:33 PM >
| | | My "bicycle exploration equipment" is still sort of "under construction"; during this winter I've explored only with my car, so I haven't had any need for any special exploration pack. I'm going to fit all this to my Halti backpack, which I bought last autumn for the Thailand trip: - Photography equipment. i.e. camera, lenses, flash, random little accessories and so on. - Flashlights, i.e. MagLite 3D with spare batteries and another, smaller one, if the 3D goes black. - Drinking water. I already have two bottle holders in my bike, but it won't be enough when driving long distances during a hot summer day. - Cellphone, keys and wallet. They're on my way if they are in my pocket. - Tire repair kit and a pump. Just in case... - A tripod, attached to the backpack. - Gloves. - Leatherman Wave, on my belt. It will weigh a bit, but it's nothing when compared to full m/85 backpack (which, btw, sucks especially as a carrying device), combat equipment (also from the year 1985, but doesn't suck as much as the backpack), some camp equipment and a RK62 rifle (I'd like to throw it to the depths of the Baltic sea) that I've been carrying all around beautiful Finnish forests (which didn't suck; the air was the cleanest I've ever breathed) during past three months (which, again, sucked) [last edit 4/7/2005 4:35 PM by Tupsumato - edited 3 times]

| | | I've used Gerber and Leatherman tools, and I prefer the Gerber ones (mostly because they're easy to open one-handed, not sure how some of the newer Leatherman ones are). The one I have now has a broken knife blade, but I use it too often to send it in for the free replacement The Gerber and a mini-mag ride on my hip pouch at all times (I've had courthouse security bitch about this, and once had to donate a Gerber to the TSA when I was late for a flight). I also carry a miniature super-bright LED keychain light, so I'm pretty much always prepared for scouting. Add a camera and a headlamp and I've got my normal mission equipment. Normal kit: Camera (Olympus C-4000) Petzl Duo headlamp Mini-maglite Gerber tool keychain light Accessories: Extra camera batteries, wide-angle lens, extra flash, tripod, etc. Extra lights and batteries Police scanner FRS radios GPS Camo clothing Gloves and kneepads Rubber boots (I wear these everywhere anyway, the Twin Cities people thought I was some kind of redneck fisherman when I visited). water / canteen wilderness survival kit (self-contained butt pack). Rarely used / special purpose stuff: Shotgun (for bears) and 12ga flares (for awesome tunnel photos) Handheld flares (for photography, too smokey to use in most places) Big fuckin' spotlight Climbing gear (rappeling rope, harness, pocket ascenders, etc). Video cameras (I own a VHS clunker that never gets used, so these are mostly borrowed). Hardhat (should use more often) Respirator (ditto) Binoculars Bolties (special circumstances only)

| | | I carry a US Army Light Rucksack. I love the way the straps that are used to close it can tighten up a load. In the main (hard to get to) compartment I have: Old cargo pants Mini-cro-bar Extra Tshirt Climbing rope Extra headlamp Extra socks Extra flannel shirt Hand Crank powered FM/AM/SW radio with built-in emergency light In the three outside pockets I have: Disposable camera One leather glove One knit glove Stocking hat (white and green) 6V waterproff flashlight Canteen Spread amoung the numerous web gear pouches I've attach to the bag I have: Digital camera Extra batteries Mini-mag (Two AA) Rayovac Two LED headlamp Small pocket knife
Hanging from a strap on one of the pouches I have my home-made manhole lifter. I welded it up from some 3/8 steel roundbar. It's about a foot long and performs admirably.
I usually wear Magnum Stealth boots, black jeans, a Tshirt and some type of flannel shirt or a light BDU jacket. I'd like to get: Respirator with asbestos filters Red LED headlamp Black stocking cap Seal Skins socks As an additional comment, I'm a very tech-loving guy and an avid inventor/tinkerer so carrying my pack is a joy.

| | | Camera (Nikon D100) Camera accessories (backup memory card, backup battery, a lens or two) Tiltall tripod Water Kleenex Benadryl (ask Zahkunst - I get attacked by insects on every outing) Epi Pen (I'm allergic to fire ants, though luckily I have yet to use this thing) Flashlight Paper mask on occasion Wallet/ID Keys Cell phone on silent The first and last three are kept with me at all times. After a walkthrough of a former fertilizer warehouse, I now know very well to have a pair of dirty Doc Martens. [last edit 4/19/2005 7:10 PM by blaspheme8 - edited 1 times]

| | | i lost my backpack on a recent excursion. lol. i know ...long story. however usually i bring as little as possible. what i did use the bag for was beer/ liquer. other than that i just bring a cellphone, spring water/.red bull or some other energy/caffeine drink, cliff bar(way better than any power bar or other so called energy bar) and maybe a source of sugar for when im feeling a little drained of energy. occasionally i bring a camera but i usually let others do the picture taking while i use my eyes.the backpack for me always comes in handy for things i may find, i know this debate has been beaten worse than most pro boxers, but i like rescuing things of historical significance from building that are just slated for the wrecking ball. I saw an electromagnetic flashlight for the first time at a hardware store a few months ago. The sales clerk said plumbers and electricians use them in case their flashlight goes out while they're in an attic. I've been considering getting one ever since. How well do they work as a primary lighting source?

| | | The following have come in handy to have with me in my satchel. - Whistle - Gloves - Led flashlight (preferably 2) - 2 Liters of H2O - Cell Phone - Nylon 1/2 inch Rope - Mini Crowbar - Knife - Watch - Bandage - Poncho - Belt - Camera - Leatherman - Duct Tape - Batteries - Lighter I know this seems like a lot, but if you look at the list each of these items are reasonably small and light weight. I can fit all of this in my satchel comfortably. Remember lightweight = good. Especially in the case of evading security. Good Luck! [last edit 4/22/2005 7:18 AM by WintermuteDesign - edited 1 times]

| | | How about one of those pressed fabric particle masks? And those little swimming goggles. Or is that a bit much? As for whistles, I carry a FOX 40. Very loud. I also use a small LED flashlight. Very bright pure white light. I add a pinch of salt and a dash of lemon juice to my water; absorbs faster and rebalances electrolytes.

They do block dust and such though. I carry one with me if I'm going anywhere dusty, so I can breathe easily.

| | | Those painter's masks wont do very much to filter out asbestos. For that you would need a respirator with p-100 filters. i carry: a 3D cell Maglite surefire G2 Respirator cameras tripod batteries for everything thats a good amount of the time, could be less or more though
