| | | Has anyone tried this? Getting on top of a train and riding it? Not me, of course, I'm not that stupid. But it could be cool.

| | | I have train hopped but definitely not on top. I would only consider doing that in the prairies or another long stretch of open fields at steady speed and grade. Way too dangerous.

A number of people try it every year. Their remains are often scraped off bridges, tunnels, traincars, and the trackbed.

After watching Speed, I don't think I'd ever wanna be anywhere near the top of a subway car.

The US doesn't know about electricity yet, so our trains run on dead dinosaurs. No overhead catenary to hit, but you get to breath diesel fumes the whole time. [last edit 10/16/2005 10:52 PM by Freak - edited 1 times]

| | | I've walked the rails many times in my youth. In our small town there were very few trains that came through, but when they did they only went 5 to 10 MPH. The temptation to hop on was too much to resist. The first time was the most terrifying (all the horror stories you ever heard come to mind) but after a couple of rides it was nothing. The first time I hitched a ride with a couple of older guys (I was about 10 years of age) I was certain we would be kidnapped and killed. Nothing like peer pressure to see you through. When we were hopping trains we were certain to follow the 11th commandment: Thou shall not get caught. All the train people were up in the engine. There was no caboose, just a flashing red light on the last car. There was no way in hell we were going to go topside. We did have one close call. Scott lived farther out than the rest of us and one day he decided to go the extra mile to save a few steps. As the train headed out of Oil City toward Franklin,PA it began to pick up speed. It wasn't long before Scott realized he may end up going the 8 miles to Franklin and possibly beyond. So he bailed, rolling a couple of times in the gravel and almost hitting a sign. He was okay, just a few scrapes and bruises. That was his last ride. I wonder why?

| | | Thank god I'm not insane enough to try this. Between the electricity, tunnels, and crazy hobos, I'd say stay away from moving trains. The tracks, however, can be quite usefull because some of them provide a strait line right across town.

Yeah I've got a buddy who's son has hopped the train and rode it through the tunnel to North Van but the train stops in that tunnel, and the fumes are deadly. But you know the kid does it again, not the sharpest tool. N. [last edit 10/17/2005 9:13 PM by nobody - edited 1 times]

| | | Have ridden on the roof of a train in Cambodia, but that's not unusual there. I'd do it, but I'd know the train and the route and all the hazards beforehand. Not something to take lightly. Kids in Rio apparently do it all the time.
