It's actually a worse idea to do it after hours, fyi, because of the amount of work car switching that occurs during the night. Station is actually much busier during the night in terms of rail traffic.

WHat about getting down to the actual station? Is it better to go on off hours or is it the same as the actual station. How long does it take to get there time wise anyways?

Well, seeing as how the tracks that the works car would be running along are the same ones that run through the tunnels that lead from Museum to Bay... I'll let you figure that one out.

There is no right answer to this. Daytime has less rail traffic, but more people about and the possibility of a movie shoot or maintenance down in Bay Lower. Night is quieter, people wise, and you can be fairly sure that the station itself will be really quiet, save for a janitor working above (although they've been known to take a breather on the lower platform). But then you run the risk of becoming a pancake on the front of a work car that's running through the tunnels (and they motor it through there).

Aren't the tracks from (lower) bay to yonge/bloor a shorter distance than the ones from museum?

Plus i'm pretty sure you can catch a glimpse of lower bay from the westbound train from yonge/bloor...

I've always heard that the better route to take is from Museum. So I'd assume thats the quicker way.

Yes, Museum is the better way because a) less traffic at the platform on museum than Yonge, LOL you don't want to pop out of the tunnels at Yonge TRUST ME theres a 100% chance that someone will see you coming out on to the Yonge platform.!!! The look on many passengers faces and questions they ask you and who knows what, someone might even call TTC employees or security by pressing that DWA emergency device thingy, that someone has emerged from the tunnel. b) Museum way is alot safer due to the centre track which allows you to hide and get cover if a train is coming, yes it may take a few minutes more to enter Museum than if you went east to yonge but hey its worth the extra time to live another day...

Well, technically it's all a matter of perspective. Tunnel running is always going to be risky, plain and simple. If you're going to do it, though, then definetely do it from Museum.

TunnelXplorer, can I ask what you were doing exploring what is, at the end of the day, nothing but a subway platform for apparently two hours?

If someone wants to get down there but doesn't want to risk their life, they a) film down there every now and then, and b) there are tours for potential film crews on the first Thursday of every month at 3 pm.

Edited to add that the Lawrence Attic has to be at least as creepy as Lower Bay, but without the danger. What's not cool about an asbestos cleaning office, a birds-eye view of subway trains, climbing two ladders, and a dark, empty room with no lights?

I finally checked out lawrence attic:

I was on a roll wednesday as far as infiltration goes, having snuck through a healthy days number of 'off-limits' areas on U of T campus and encountering people in all three buildings but not ever being seen. So on my way home around 9:30PM I decided I had to use my invisibility powers discovered earlier that day to check out lawrence attic.

I'd heard and read much about this great anomaly of the ttc system and the previous night I'd snooped around the south end tunnels (forgetting that the attic entrance was on the north end of course) and finding all the doors in that end locked. I tried to do the north end but there was a ttc man waiting around that end of the platform that night, and he wasn't leaving. So with that little bit of subway infil experience I decided to check out the north end and the attic. Besides, I had both my maglite and my camera with me and lawrence is on my way home anyway.

I got to Lawrence about 10PM, riding in the last car on the northbound train, to give me time while i walked to the north end, for the people to clear. Made sure to dodge the rather poorly place cameras by walking between the pillars (oh how sneaky). No ttc people tonight, only a guy had shown up at the very south end of the platform with a guitar case just missing the northbound train and 3 r 4 people waiting on the southbound. I had a seat with the southbound crew and when that train came and went i walked with the people leaving the station, fidgeting with my mp3 player until they left. Then i just waited for guitar man to pace back behind the pillars out of sight and i quietly as possible opened the wee 'danger' gate.

*the attic.. last time I saw it anyway*

I made quick for the staircase I'd always seen from the subway and got into the attic just in time for a southbound train birdseye view! Thankfully no ttc worky folk were hiding upstairs to accuse me of being a terrorist or suicidal or something. I checked it all out, I suppose I don't have to go over details as most folk here have seen it (or havent and don't want me to spoil it). but that pitch black empty attic above the platform is definitely the trippiest place I've ever been. I was there alone and my maglite couldn't even penetrate half that darkness, it felt like being in outer space...with gravity. it was a dreamlike experience, a never ending hallway. a non-space. Just the sheer size of the whole attic space was impressive, such a large space that has seemingly little function.

The grates in Yonge street were really cool too, watching cars and trucks drive over top was another trippy experience. I also tried the big ladder up to the manhole cover and got run over by what sounded like a bus. And I think I was still invisible, nobody saw me standing around watching them on the escalator. not that anyone was paying attention to a space they probably didn't know existed. I got some pictures, but I didn't have my tripod so most of them are garbage. Oh and I dragged my callsign into the dust at some point in the non-space for anyone who goes there next, assuming the dust doesn't take it over.

I left around 11:30, had to hide from 2 trains waiting for people to leave the platform. even after that there was an old woman sitting on the first bench on the north end, facing the south rail though. so she didn't see me, until i was out in the open. then she got this all confused look trying to figure out where i came from as she hadn't heard or seen me come down the stairs. that was funny.

Then I got on the train and went home and told my roommate about all the great infiltration I'd done that day. and my girlfriend...who didn't exactly like the fact that I'd walked on live subway tracks just to get some pictures which didn't even turn out anyways. I told her i walked on the ledge! not the tracks. and that I spent as little time as possible at track level anyways, the object is to not be seen ever, duh....she still didn't like it.

What are the chances of a train coming through Lower Bay during the day? barely a chance I think...my last visit I looked at the rails at Lower bay, they don't look like the rest of the stations " shiny " showing signs of usage so it means no train has been through there to switch lines for a while.

That's not a good attitude to have. Trains will come through there whenever they get routed, randomly. Trains get switched there, and you can never really know when. You do best to avoid it during rush hours and very late at night.

what is this TTC scanner thing?????????? It detects if a subway is coming or something???? does anybody know where to get one?

I find it humourous that you guys get all pissy about announcing times to visit the place -- but find nothing wrong in dispensing advice about scanners.

What about an after hours or late night attempt to reach lower bay?

Does anyone know the levels of security and train activity then?

I hear going after 1:30am is a good idea (crazy sarcasm)
