| | | I'm looking at princeton LED flashlights/headlights. http://www.princet...?id=2&type=0&use=1 Has anyone used these? They FULL product specs; lumen output instead of saying "1 watt LED". Incandescents use to much wattage. I been using two right angle Ray-O-_Vacs, and a Streamlight LED. The Streamlight is ok, but it's ring attachment is wimpy, 20 more lumens wouldn't hurt either. Many times I want to limit my light signature but still see holes in the floor.

The high end ones with the mil specs do look like they kick-ass. More to consider. Thanks!

| | | They are def expensive. I spent more money on flashlights, then my camera setup. I have three surefire flashlights. L2 Lumamax, 6P w/red filter cap, and one other one I forgot the name of. I use the L2 the most. Makes for awsome light painting too. Ill post a few shots I had to light paint w the l2 because it was pitch black.

You your assets depend on it you need at least two. I always pack three plus extra bats when in deep dark places. This is as bad as selecting a tripod. I wish they had one with a right angle head, my cheap ray-o-vacs spoiled me!

I've got the PT Apex and EOS headlamps. They're both pretty badass. Waterproof, digital regulation, multiple light levels, and decent runtimes. The beam from the EOS is more of a 'spot' beam than a 'flood' beam, but that's easy to fix with a $5 aftermarket reflector. Oh yeah, another vote for Sure flashlights (especially the LED models)! I've got the E2e, with the KL4 (5-watt) and KL1 (3-watt) LED heads. The KL4 puts out an insane wall of light.

I like KL4 output but it's burn time could be better. Can the PT headlamps be clipped onto vests, etc? Fun stuff, Thanks for the help.

| | | Different lights for different situations, of course, but my all purpose set up is something like this: 2AA Mini-Maglite (backup) Rayovac 3 mode headlamp (red&white LED plus krypton lamp, general use) Dorcy 6V (use to illuminate largish rooms or tunnels) Surefire 6P (long distance scouting) Million CP spotlight (for those extreme cases when nothing else will do) Most of those lights aren't expensive, and that suits me fine. I'm always very surprised with the Dorcy lights, they cost $3 and they put out an appreciable light with a nice beam. In addition, they're so simple you can make repairs on site should one get dropped or damaged!
We see the light at the end of the tunnel... and turn the other way. |

| | | Recent acquisition: Coast, Model #LL7736. A 1.25-watt, 3-AAA cell flashlight. Very bright. Using cheap batteries (rather than the esoteric C123's found in a lot of so-called 'tactical' lights). Small too - compared to others. 4-3/8" by just under an inch diameter. The Noma was 4-7/8" by 1-1/4" in comparison. Link: http://www.coastcu...odid=268&mastCat=5 Nice feel to the Coast. Black. Knurled. Rear positioned push button. Momentary press or click-on. There were some quality control issues though. The gasket was falling apart when I opened the light. It appeared there was only about 1/2 of the gasket there and it fell out. The screw thread seemed loose. That is, the cap is a tad too large and even when it is almost screwed all the way down there is considerable play. Have to be careful not to cross-thread it or over-tighten it. The plastic lens has a slight surface wrinkle in it. Like the plastic didn't mold perfectly to a flat surface. It won't affect the light output significantly Other than those things, I am still pleased with the light. It's not worth going back to try and get a replacement even though the thing is rather expensive - almost $50 (Can.) at Le Baron. The beam is surprisingly spread out and smooth for such a small reflector. I like the diameter just fine. Other lights tend to be focussed too well for practicality. It would have been nice if it had a lower brightness level like the Noma - to conserve batteries. But currently, the Coast beats the Noma for its smaller size, brighter beam, 2 sets of included AAA batteries, gold internal contacts. Even includes a carabiner. Sheath appears to be of higher quality fabric with a soft padded interior feel. The bubble-pack packaging is such that you can depress the button and conveniently blind yourself right there in the store. And I still do it. I don't know why I keep shining it in my eyes. I just can't believe it's that bright for its size. I see spots.

| | | I bought a Surefire L4 a little over a year ago. At the time, I wasn't sure a $160US flashlight would be justifiable. Now, though, I think it's been worth every penny. As tick said, the KL4 5 watt head puts out an insane amount of light. Too much some times. The build quality is top-notch, and the beam is perfect for what I need it for. It doesn't throw as far as some lights, but it's got a smooth beam center and lots of spill. Good for keeping yourself from walking into beams and pipes. I've dropped it many times onto concrete from 4 feet or more and it's working perfect. On the down side, it does eat batteries rather quickly. And it gets hot. Hot enough that you can barely hold any part of the light after half an hour on. Kinda nice some times in the winter though I also usually carry a 2AA mini Mag with an led conversion. It's probably equivalent to a 1-watt Luxeon for brightness. Not a great beam pattern or color, but it's plenty for a backup. I've yet to need to replace the batteries in it too. I'd be curious to see how the led conversion compares to the led mini mag.

Be advised Coast lights have all the water resistance of a sieve. Keep it dry and it will be OK, but this is not a light to use in damp locations. As usual, carry a backup light just in case.

If the cost is eating you alive, there are rechargables out there that will work in the L4. See http://www.wiki.tj...ompatibility_Chart

| | | Thanks for the link, it's nice to know what fits what and how well. It'd be interesting to see a runtime comparison too. My brother has some Nimh batteries in his Surefire. I'll most likely get a couple sets for mine when I've used up the batch of batteries I recently picked up.

| | | For your main light The Streamlight 3C-XP offers the combination of a super bright Xenon lamp with the superior run-time of LED's. Choose between the Xenon lamp and LED's via a dual switch control.... each function has its own push button on/off switch. The 3 LED's will give you over 300 hours of run-time( on one set of batteries) The battery will support a minimum of 1 hour of LED light after the incandescent (main Xenon bulb) runs out. The LEDs make the light ideal for directing traffic (with optional wand), navigating a cockpit, or to light a path. The Xenon lamp give you power for longer range lighting needs, with a 5-6 hr runtime on all on one set of inexpensive C-cell batteries, As your back-up Features of Streamlight 2L Twin-Task Flashlight: - powered by two 3V lithium batteries, included - 4.8V xenon bulb with adjustable focus - 3 bright white, 100,000 hr life "Nichia" LEDs - 72 lumens, xenon (2.5 hrs run time) - 10 lumens, 3 LEDs (up to 28 hrs run time) - 5.43" long - weighs 5.4 ounces with batteries - anodized machined aluminum body Steramlight rocks!
