| | | I read over most of what that article said and it looked like they were only talking about active detectors, I think the questions were dealing with passive detectors.

| | | nightshadow... you didn't read over enough of the "most of it then"... It does discuss Passive detectors...

| | | To beat a PIR detector, get yourself an IR laser at 10 micron (10000nm) and shoot it at the detector. Gradually increase the power until the scene is effectively washed out. Stop before the detector bursts into flame.

| | | Changes in temperature...I have noticed that some motion sensored security lights take longer to detect someone and turn on the lights on a hot summer night, and on a cold night it will light up if you wave at it from 20 feet away. Speaking theoretically, what if one were to wear a large jacket or say a wetsuit and carry around dry ice, then run past the sensor as quickly as possible? Or slowly... Also, motion sensors can be set with different "null zones" i.e. in a home that has a dog one can travel around safely by crawling on one's belly. They are set that way, obviously, so the dog (or possibly a raccoon or whatever depending on the site) would not trigger false alarms. I would think that in a tightly secured area this would not be the case. This has me curious, I may have to set my home alarm system to "test" mode and try a bunch of things out. Anyone know the typical ranges of these PIR's are? Like how far can they "see?"

I encountered this motion detector while exploring an abandoned asylum today. Luckily it was off as I didn't see any lights and I didn't get caught. Any insights?

Wow. That thing either ancient or possibly the weirdest motion sensor that I've ever seen. What hospital was this in? That might shed some light on it.

| | | Doing extinguisher checks this afternoon, me and my co-worker set off a motion detector... I would've given anything to see the look on my face when the alarm tripped. I should've read this thread earlier... may have been useful... Samurai

Fairfield Hills State Hospital in Newtown, CT. Shut down in 1995. I have no idea when they installed the security system.

| | | if you want to check on active ir detectors the ones have send out any thing. use a digital camera to look at the detector, the digital imaging stuff in the cameras will pick up infrared light and if it is on it should glow pretty well and for those of you who are trying to cut the power and stuff, why don't you just hook up a switch to it,
cheap diagram ____/_____ switch -> |________| | | ________ wire----|-- --|---- detector| ________| wire ---------------
i think the switch could possibly work.....just an idea the weird dots are to keep it spaced right, i had to edit to a couple times to get it right [and Krazy fixes the formatting] [last edit 1/2/2004 6:54 PM by MacGyver - edited 3 times]
what are you thinking about right now? |
