| | Over night UEing < on 11/19/2003 10:37 PM >
| | | So How many of you have done over night UEing? Have you learned anything that you might want to pass on to others? Living on an island sourounded by little island a few years ago in the summer friends and I would take a walmart inflatiable raft and go from island to island checking it out etc. We also have done some squating and some camping inbetween sites. I must say water was the biggest problem One can not have enough water. When we were on mainland/civilization sometimes we would walk to where we were camping 5/10 miles early evening on back roads. Then one of us would trot over to a local grocery store or gas station and buy water and walk it in. However the islands ment when your water was low you had to go. One time on an island are raft broke (friend set it on a thorn bush (slaps head)) and we had to cashe stuff. Casheing things is also very important. One huge problem we have had is time limits and long distances. One day we rafted down a river to a old damn system. The plan was go down the swift current get to the damn areaget out and exsplore. Well the big damn up river wasnt pumping out the water in sufficent force. After getting thourghly burned and paddeling all day with two rafts tied together we end up getting out under a bridge. After packing all are stuff up we had to trek through the woods about a mile. All of a sudden I realize my car is in the gated park and we would have to run like hell to get to my best friends car in town. In town was about 5 miles away. The other car we had parked was a little less far. My best friend and I headed to the longer distance as we were faster. The other two friends went towards the other one. Needless to say it was a race against time. We had about an hour to get to the cars then a 30 minute drive. Took use a while but we got my car out. Moral of my ranting. DONT PARK YOUR CAR IN PLACES YOU CANT GET TO. Anyways. We stashed are stuff to. Took us two days to find are rafts. That was fun to. This was a long post I dont want to delete half so just read the top and reply with your ideas.

| | | Never done an overnight trip... but I've considered bringing camping gear for some of the further drives. Now that its winter, that alternative would be less fun. Caput_58

| | | I am planning to do an overnight at BRS. It is appx. 26 acres of overgrown lawns, woods, creeks and over course multiple buildings to explore (See DB provided by Caput-58). Winter camping can be a challenge, and not always comfortable, but definetly adds to the adventure... I hope to wake up to several feet of snow, so I'll be consulting weather.com to plan the exact timing

| | | Ohhh buddy! I love the snow. The cold weather is gonna suck. There are some cool socks out there (which i am sure you have seen) that wick away moisture. If you just go with thick socks you need a pair change every 12 hours and a few extra pair. It will cut down on the chances of frost bite. If you got feet of snow pop your tent and cover that bitch in snow. Ohhh that sounds like so much freaking fun!!!

| | | I have been wanting to spend the night at a site for a while. Never had one that we would be able to do it at though....untill now The place is great for now, but I think by the time it gets warm again the oppiturnity woult be there anymore, so im tryin to see who i can convince to do it in the cold. There are a few buildings with spots that im 99% sure we shouldent have any problems in, we could allso always spend the night in the tunnels. I have sub zero sleeping bags that I have used in 20dergee weather so that shouldent be a problem. Snece its only 1 night food and water chouldent be a problem either. I cant wait tilll i find some people who want to and have time to do it with me.

| | | I've always wanted to spend a night (or weekend) camping down in Va Tech's steam tunnels. It's plenty warm, and there are a few rooms throughout the tunnel network that are cockroach-free. Only real problem is finding an accomplice. Oh yeah, and the asbestos. Can't forget about the asbestos. That'd be a problem too. Caput: I think it'd be really cool to spend the night at Sweet Springs. I guess I'd have to get in good with the groundskeeper (or whoever lives in that occupied cottage).

| | | If your contomplating a overnighter its best two have 3 people. I also like the survival blankets(silver ones) and the huge garbage bags. You can insulate yourself so well with those. Anyways if any of you are preping for one please post here what you are thinking about taking etc. It should help others who might do it. I can give a few tips of what I exsperinced.

| | | Well I do most my visits over a weekend period. I disguise the tent using camo netting, and usually take a tent that will be the same colour as my surroundings. Scouting out your entrances, mapping the area and going back and forth for a second attempt is alot easier when you know you've got a whole weekend to do it. Bring food like chocolate bars, and potato chips, and replace as much water as you can with a sugary drink. Pitch your tent in nearby woods or fields, and try to go in twos or threes. And seriously, bring a radio, portable tv, gameboy or whatever other entertainment you can, because the evenings can be booooring. (unless of course you like to talk all night like me and my friends do) Oh, and another useful thing to know, is that a two man tent, is actually a one man tent that COULD fit two men.

| | | I was going to post about how often I've camped out at UE sites, when I realized that almost all my camping trips in the last few years have involved UE, I don't know if that's good or bad Maybe I need to get out in the real wilderness more often. My summer road trip was basically one big UE camping trip, we meant to go to the remote Kennicot mine, hike up to the tunnels, camp for a couple days either on the mountain or inside, and then continue to Fairbanks. We ended up camping more along the way (delayed when we needed to replace some broken gear) and not even making it to the mines (my friend was a wuss). I'm definitly doing solo camping or using my own tent next time, we were ready to kill eachother after 5 days. Also this summer I took a road trip to Seward, rented a kayak, and went out to some old WWII bunkers. I should have camped IN the bunker, but I ended up coming back to the beach late and setting up in a bad spot, which turned into a pond when it started raining overnight (my mummy bag stayed waterproof until about 6am though!) I did some more weekend camping trips this summer, all to UE locations, sometimes solo and sometimes with other people. I wanted to do more camping and exploring in Fairbanks this fall, but I never had time (last year I biked up some local hills and out to a remote dredge on overnight trips). Here's some actual pictures, I have more but they're not online: Camped in Whittier's Buckner Building, I was going to camp on the roof but it was raining too hard. http://freak.minimanga.com/whittier/pages/buckner199.htm That camo tent would make Jester proud, I've been camped 10 feet from passersby and rowdy teens who never noticed me, and once in what later turned out to be some rednecks's backyard My typical gear load for an overnight trip: http://freak.minimanga.com/bcscout.jpg Mummy bag, mini camo tent, foam pad, folding stove, cooking pan and utensils, food, water canteen, change of clothes, binocluars, camera, flashlight, survival kit (in fanny pack) with space blanket, fire starting stuff, first aid kit, signaling devices, spare knife, spare compass, spare flashlight, fishing gear/snares, twine, duct tape, etc). If I'm camping in bear country I'll somtimes bring a gun or at least some seal bombs (M-80s)

| | | I have always wanted to camp at a site, but around here in Minneapolis I can't really think of too many places where that would work. I have camped near spots, but the intent was always just to camp and then through exploration i found interesting places to see. I have done winter camping several times, in fact a buddy of mine is interested in going sometime soon, but it's been too warm lately! We like going when there is snow. This one place, Lake Maria State Park, has some nice hike in sites and we found a site suitable to us. When we got there we couldn't find the fire ring through all the snow, so we just dug down into the foot of snow and laid out our own fire pit, after getting the fire going letting it burn a little, we saw the Forest service's fire pit, we had somehow built right on top of it and our fire eventually melted it's way down into the pit. Odd coincidence. We like to say that extreme winter camping is a treatment that we need to appreciate life. It forces you to rely on survival instincts, i.e.-"We have to find wood or we freeze to death!" Freak- I'd love to come up to Alaska and explore with you sometime, you sound like you have some good adventures that are right up my alley. Asylunt

Eh... covering your tent with snow may sound like a good idea for heating purposes, except for one tiny little thing. Lets say its snowing pretty well before you go to sleep, so you cover your tent with a good amount of snow to give it some good insulation. Unfortunately, the heat from inside is going to melt the snow closest to the tent, causing it to ice. So now you have an ice cave that you've built around your tent - but you don't know this, since you're fast asleep... you also don't know that without any sort of ventilation, you're poisoning the air with lethal doses of carbon dioxide and odds are, with 2 people in a small-sized tent, you'd both be dead in the morning. If you do decide to do something like this, I'd recommend building actual walls around your tent (about half its height or so) and making sure that your rainfly is set up over it, so if the snow does get up relatively high you'll still get some airflow through the vents. footsteps light, flashlights bright -~ DT

Believe it or not, Sugary drinks [i.e. soda] actually take away water from your body. So it's best to drink water, the natural hydrator!

I meant drinking drinks that will give you energy. Sugar is what your body uses as fuel in case you hadn't noticed. Without sugar you would die instantly. Any kind of sugary drink will do, just so long as it gives you as much sugar as you can get. I tell ya camping really takes it outta ya. (yes folks it is a shameful impersination of a southern US accent) Red bull is a pretty good drink to take before your about to go out, or any similar tourine based energy drink. I think you get the idea.

| | | Careful with them potato chips though, as they tend to be salty, so you'll go through your liquids at a much faster rate. Besides, nobody wants to share a tent for the night with some deranged, sugar overdosed, hyper-caffinated guy who has to get up and piss every five minutes because he drank five cans of Red Bull in a row.

I never said anything about drinking five cans of Red Bull in a row. And I am certainly highly against sharing tents. Having done it myself I know that it doesn't work. Potato chips, chocolate bars, all high energy stuff that you can finish once opened. Even while I'm walking around the site, I'm still eating lucozade energy sweets. I don't really find that I get hyper because I burn off the energy doing UE... Whenever I go camping I always find myself craving food, and eating tons of it. I try to keep it sensible, but at the same time I do obey my bodies needs.

| | | Sorry, TT, I have to disagree with you on your choice of diet. The problem with eating a lot of sugar is that it gives you a quick rush of energy, but then you come down off of that pretty fast, leaving you worse off than you were before. Also, if you eat a lot of salty foods, you can become dehydrated faster than normal, especially if you're working up a sweat doing some exploring. You'd be better off with straight water, or at least something like Gatorade that replaces electrolites. For food - anything with a lot of carbs, but low sodium. Also, you could leave and go hit a Denny's somewhere and come back later. C.
