| | Play it cool or run? < on 1/8/2007 6:09 PM >
| | | Yesterday my brother in law and I were exploring a closed steel plant when we were spotted by security. We were way out in the open in the middle of an area that was once a large complex. The security guy was on the "road" about 150 feet away. We thought about running but realized he was going to cut us off and we would have to find another way out of the perimeter (which involved crossing a nasty canal and a fence with one of those barbed wire V's on the top. We quickly decided that running would be a pain in the ass and even though we had about a 50/50 chance of getting away, we decided not to try. The guy was cool and let us go, but things could have turned out differently. Would you have run?

| | | Depends on the situation. You need to weigh your options. If you think you have a better chance talking your way out, do that. If you know you can run and get away, go with that.

| | | In the situations where I've been faced with guards or other people, I've found there are usually three options. 1. Hide, if you're sure you haven't been seen 2. Run for it 3. Play it cool- either approach the guards before they approach you, or simply be 'out for a walk' if they ask There's a time and a place for all of them, as DeMiNe0 said. In the situation you described, I'd probably have done the same.

Yeah, we tried to duck behind a big piece of equipment but when it became clear that we had been spotted, we started walking towards the way we came in. When it was obvious that the car was going to be able to cut off our exit, we decided to play it cool. I think next time I'll run, if he'd decided to be a dick about it we'd have been in alot of trouble.

| | | If it were just a security guard I'd probably be more inclined to run than if it were an actual cop. If you ran and did get caught by a cop they might tack on an "Evading Police" charge which is an M1. In Ohio I think it'd be something like this: [§ 2921.33.1] § 2921.331. Failure to comply with order or signal of police officer. (http://onlinedocs....main-h.htm&cp=PORC) So a M1 & a M4 vs. a M4. [last edit 1/8/2007 11:10 PM by xc_rocker - edited 2 times]

| | | I don't think I'd ever run from a cop unless I was 100% sure I could get away. It's no good if you get caught. As a juvenile, I'd probably do it but not as an adult.

| | | Running can be considered a sign of guilt. Unless the guard is absolutely certain s/he can catch you, they'll just get all the info they can on you (preferably license plates on your car, description etc) and call the cops. Then if something is missing or found broken, you'll have a hard time trying to explain your presence on the property if you are caught. Most times, laying trespassing charges are a pain in the ass. Paperwork and all kinds of other bull crap! Play it cool. Usually the guard will ask you to leave and if you just leave, that's the end of it. Just don't come back. I've caught a lot of people on the property that were not supposed to be there. I've only had to call the cops once because the guy got abusive and refused to leave. The others left and nothing more came of it. Last year, Shutterbug and I were at her sister's former home to pick up some stuff for her sister. The sister's ex-landlady knew we were coming and we thought she told her boyfriend. Well, the boyfriend either wasn't told or he forgot. Left the place and set the alarm. Of course, when we opened the door, the alarm went off before we could enter the code. We thought about leaving but I thought, the neighbours probably got our plate numbers so leaving was not a good idea. We waited until the cops arrived, walked up to them and explained what happened. Ten minutes later, the alarm was silenced, the cop had left (after having a good laugh) and we got the stuff we came for. Oh, and we reset the alarm when we left. I hate to think of the shit storm that would have happened if we left. We would have one bitch of a time explaining ourselves to the cops and the landlady was a bit of a bitch.
Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back. |

| | | It never a good idea to run from a cop. If security is as friendly a these guys, it would have been ashame to run and only to have the cops call in as back up and get busted big time. Once the cops know your there, things can get real rough if they're determined to find you. K-9's, perimeters, and helicopters with FLIR, oh my! Now, will you go back?

What are you going to do at night? That's a good way to die. Blast furnaces aren't very safe in the daytime. At night you had better know every inch of that steel, pray no one left a surprise like a big car size hole in the deck plating. Looters go wild at those sites which may be why the guards are there.

Relax, man! Lots of people explore at night. Experienced explorers can typically survive night explorations. So I doubt he's going to die.

Ever been on a blast furnace at night? I have. Not a good idea. Falling on steel is like concrete; it breaks bones. Holes (large) in the decking are common with 2+ story drops.

| | | Seriously though, it's not like you're totally blind at night. You have flashlights and most of the time, you have enough ambient light coming from somewhere to be able let you know what's a four foot wide hole and what isn't. It's not paying attention to where you're going that leads to accidents more so than the time of day.

Yeah, but with security there you'll be force to use ambient light. Ba-ha-ha-ha-ha, I did just that. Including transversing a section of steel stairs with a 10 foot section cut out. that was to line up for some dawn shots and to evade the ever present early bird cops. The holes are sometimes covered too, and if there's corrosion, which is common after the heat is gone, decking, 1/4 and 1/2 plate mind you, can be pure rust. Night is neither ally nor foe; it's neutral.

| | | I'll just stick to the "road" and use a light once inside the structures I'm going to explore. I have two lights, a super bright and a small dim one for situations where a light could give me away. It works pretty well, but I want a red lens or something for my bright one.
