Went by last weekend. And I know there's probably about 43 million pics of the DVBW on here already, but... I'm still pretty brand-new to UE. And the Brick Works is just one of those kinda requisite locations, that you have to check out, right? So for anyone interested, here they are. Sorry if they're a bit on the "artsy-fartsy" side of the spectrum; as opposed to a more straight-up "photojournalism" style.

Nice pics, I've never actually bothered to look at any brickworks pics yet, so you took my DVBW virginity...and it was good.

The DVBW is probably the best spot in Toronto for beginners. Looks like you had a good time.

And no need to apologize for "artsy" photos.

Nice work. Whats going on with the Brickworks?
Didn't they say that they where/are going to do something with the place?
Man it takes then a long time to do something. I guess it's good for us right?
Any updates?

Well, I think some company called Evergreen owns it now. They've put down some nice cobblestone brick pathway thing over by the parking lot... There's a farmers' market there every Saturday (in the big, open part). Apparently there's pottery-making classes and stuff there too. We saw some dads fishing out back with their kids, off the nice, shiny new concrete thing. *shrugs*

The cool part, though, is still fenced off... I hope to heck they leave it alone, and don't turn it into some ice cream shop(pe), or a Starbucks with a petting zoo; and have Tuesday morning pilates classes there. I guess it's kinda good that they seem to want to "protect" the area as a green space... But it also seems that they're really bent on "doing cool family/yuppie-oriented stuff" with the land, and the property and it's buildings.

I'd like to go back again ASAP, with my "real" (ie. black & white film) camera... I dunno, but I've got an icky, afraid feeling, about it remaining left as it is for too much longer. There's a definite "corporate presence" on the property now. And I suppose it's their prerogative to "use" the buildings however they see fit, unfortunately.

It's sad... Although it is one of the most rudimentary, basic UE sites around southern Ontario, it IS very beautiful and peaceful and serene. I NEED to go back there very soon, and shoot SEVERAL (dozen) rolls. I really want to do my little part, to help "preserve" it, as it is right now. I'm just afraid for it's future.

From Evergreen's website:

Evergreen is transforming Toronto’s historic Don Valley Brick Works factory from an underused, deteriorating collection of buildings into a thriving environmentally-based community centre that engages visitors in diverse experiences connected to nature.

Now, imagine that place is right in the heart of your city.

EVERGREEN Brick Works will be a dynamic place that adapts and grows to meet new urban challenges. It will be a centre for innovation and fresh thinking that will inspire future generations to RETHINK their place in the world.

Evergreen is working with E.R.A Heritage Architects, the City of Toronto and the Ontario Heritage Foundation to preserve the industrial and architectural character of the site while giving the heritage buildings a new lease on life by adding community programming that complements the nature of the site.

Some of the buildings on site need some work and won’t officially open until 2009. But there is a lot going on at the site right now! Since 2004, Evergreen and our partners have offered a wide array of fun programs for kids and adults, large outdoor community festivals and more!

THE DISCOVERY CENTRE
In an age of indoor play, cancelled recess, and virtual realities, this family-friendly experiential learning lab will connect children of all ages with nature. The Discovery Centre will immerse children in a multi-sensory, low-tech experience that starts in the local past and moves towards the global future.

DEMONSTRATION GARDENS
The Brick Works Demonstration Gardens will showcase the latest innovations in pesticide-free home landscaping and gardening, restoration projects on public lands and school ground greening. Evergreen will engage visitors in maintaining the gardens, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship that can be replicated in cities around the world.

NATIVE PLANT NURSERY
Inspired by the demonstration gardens, visitors will find a selection of trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, heritage vegetables and berry bushes for sale. In collaboration with the YMCA, the nursery will offer youth-at-risk jobs and skills training. Nursery staff will share tips for getting started on your own naturalized or organic food garden.

GATEWAY TO THE RAVINE SYSTEM
Every city has its treasures, the cultural and natural landmarks that define a place and give it meaning. Evergreen at the Brick Works will be the jewel in the necklace of restored parks along the Don River, connecting the headwaters to the waterfront. The Brick Works Trail Centre will open Toronto’s ravine systems to one and all.

FOUR SEASONS OF OUTDOOR FUN
The breath-taking parklands contain four kilometres of walking trails, natural wetlands and wildflower meadows. In the winter, visitors can enjoy outdoor skating rinks.

A NEW APPROACH TO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Evergreen aspires to deliver on three bottom lines: economic, environmental and social. The business model has been developed to achieve cost recovery by year two. As a provisional measure, an endowment will be put in place to ensure financial sustainability.

THE LATEST IN GREEN DESIGN
From the gardens to the parking lots, green design will be incorporated into all aspects of the site. Through interactive displays that show real examples of green roofs, photovoltaic panels, biomass heating, living walls, naturalized landscapes and more, visitors will take away the knowledge and inspiration to incorporate green design into their own homes and workplaces.

PROGRAMMING SPACE FOR SUSTAINABLE ORGANIZATIONS
Evergreen’s national headquarters will be the anchor tenant, joined by other socially-responsible organizations, creating new opportunities for collaboration and efficiency. All tenants will sign a values charter that defines a shared vision of inspiring social change by demonstrating leadership and innovation.

A REFRESHING FOOD EXPERIENCE
Evergreen and a diverse group of local food partners will offer food gardens; a marché with fresh, healthy alternatives to fast food at affordable prices; a farmers’ market offering locally-grown produce, environmentally-friendly products and fair-trade goods; a Jamie Kennedy Foundation Restaurant as well as teaching kitchens for special events and community dinners.

SOPHISTICATED AND CULTURAL SPACES
Evergreen at the Brick Works is the ideal location for events, theatre, art exhibitions, film, conferences, music and weddings.

God DAMN... It's even worse than I thought! Here's MY humble, little idea: How about you just fucking leave it alone?!

(Are we allowed to swear here?)

The pics do have a flavor all to themselves... it just took me 4 times to see what was going on in the background. Shame on me.

From the Toronto Star, December 21st, 2006:

"Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Lawrence Cannon, federal minister of transport, infrastructure and communities, made the announcement. Though detailed design work won’t be ready until spring, it will include a farmers’ market, restaurants, school programs, a performance space, demonstration gardens, a plant nursery, nature trails, wetlands and meadows. The 15 heritage buildings on the Brick Works property will also be cleaned up and re-used."

That's pretty weak. Nice photos though... a couple are a hair blurry but it's nice to see a new take on a familiar place. I especially like the third one.

Thank you. Blurriness is 'cause I didn't want to use a flash, and end up with everything washed-out, and blown-out highlights. The pics were just from a shitty little 5.0 MP pocket digital, which usually defaulted to a 1/8th of a second shutter speed, because of the relative darkness in there. Like I said, I really, really wanna go back with my Nikon, and some Fuji Neopan 1600 black & white film...

The Evergreen restoraion project, in my opinion, is incredible Respects tely reusing teh buildings. The status quo will only see the buildings continued deterioration. Your mileage may vary.

I guess the project itself is, fundamentally, a good idea. I'm just sketch on the idea that the property will now likely be accommodating literally thousands of families and kids and people every year/summer. *shrugs* People are inherently destructive buggers.

I would be surprised if saving the buildings and putting them to use would be more damaging than abject neglect.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I guess I'm sorta just being a selfish bastard, lol. If left as is, they'd probably have at least a couple decades left as a viable, relatively safe UE destination. (The part with the brick kilns or whatever? Those are some pretty darn solid structures! Being an "industrial" place, I'm sure it was originally constructed to pretty tough standards; to be durable and to withstand a lot of physical abuse, without having to put too much effort into maintenance...) But once it's converted into a "destination for families" or whatever? The UE-interest factor is gonna be almost zero. And looks like that's gonna happen within the next year or two. *shrugs* Pros and cons, no matter what's done with it, I guess...

they are already holding events. i actually caught this on tv about a week or so before it actually happened. held at the brickworks july 13 & 14.

so while i do think that turning the brickworks into people space is generally a good thing, considering the many possible alternatives. but im also a selfish bastard as well and im with Magnoodles; x 10^5

I'm certainly sympathetic with that position. It is a great location and it will be sad to see it go.
