Why not to camp in abandoned buildings

Last month I decided to camp in an abandoned building along the Delaware with a friend of mine and my dog. The building is slated to be demolished soon (or turned into a ranger station if structurally sound) and we wanted to spend a night before it became inaccessible. It was formerly an inn, so it had plenty of rooms, and was clean. Being well sealed off kept the vandals out. Our original intent was to use the fireplace as a campfire, but there was too much creosote in the chimney, and we did not want to damage the building. We got our gear and stuff inside, and each picked which room we would sleep in. Then at about 11:00 I went outside to walk the dog, and things went downhill. My friend stayed inside at the bar, preparing empty liquor bottles for a photo-shoot. In hindsight, it was not the best of idea's since the cops and rangers spotted my car on the road, and spent a while calling into the woods for us to come out, thinking that we were lost hikers or something. Since I was using a light walking my dog at this time they noticed activity by the building, and staked it out for a while. I quickly turned out my light, and ditched it as well as the Leatherman on my belt, but had the dilemma that I could not move to get back in the building to warn my friend what was going on. He had his phone on the front seat of my car, so calling him was not an option. I had to wait in the dark for about 1/2 hour, and fortunately the cops did not approach the building. We decided that the best thing to do was to go up to the cops and pretend to be lost hikers, but when we got up to my car, thay had already left. With them gone we snuck our stuff back to my car, and took off to camp on the Pennsylvania side of the river.

just some thoughts

well i think if your going to camp in building's (not that i would) you should do things like leave the dog at home. unless your planning on using the "my dog ran away" story and i have used that without a dog. keep your cell phones with you and turn them to vibrate or silent if you will check it every hour or so. park some place inconspicuous and if thats not an option just park on the side of the road & put up a sign. "out of gas will return tomorrow" maybe add your phone number. if you do that take a gas can with you to bring back.

F this I"m going exploring!

I think the lesson here is to not park your car around the building you're camping in. The cops probably wouldn't have bothered had it not been for that particular detail.

Good ideas about the leaving the cars in places that won't create attention. Alot of calls are placed about "suspicious" vehicles. If you are leaving your car somewhere for an extended time make sure it is not a hazard or in a place that someone might have it towed. A note is a good idea. They probably won't bother with it if you say it is disabled and you will be back to get it. I have spent alot of time tracking down owners of vehicles left in places they should not be. If there is a note it is normally just logged and checked again in 24 hours.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. However, I love sleeping in buildings far too much for this to phase me.

The irony of all of this is that I was in a designated legal parking area for a national park trail. The only reason we stood out I guess was that this trailhead was not for backpackers, just day hikers. There was no posted "park closed" time though.

Gotta think carefully about where you're gonna park! Always make sure it makes sense to be parked there for the time you'll be inside. Dog def seems like a real bad look too unless the place was suuuuuper easy and had no chance of security.

Next time, we would get a campsite down the road, and leave the car there while in the building. Given the 2 mile walk though we would need to drop off the gear beforehand. As for the dog, once NJ allows dogs in state campgrounds, I can take him camping in "normal" places. I know taking him was a bad idea, but with my parents away for the weekend, there would have been nobody to take care of him.

If you absolutely have to camp in an abandoned building why not just bring a sleeping bag and find a dry spot. its going to be a hell of a lot easier to grab that and dart than a whole bunch of gear you really don't need.

The Misandry around these parts is redonkulous. Sorry I was born with male anatomy.

Squatting is generally when you actually live in an abandoned space...not camp there overnight. If you are interested in learning about squatting I met someone on a press trip last year that wrote a whole book about it after living with squatters in different countries across the globe: Shadow Cities: A Billion Squatters, A New Urban World. He has a blog too: http://squattercity.blogspot.com/

Squatting doesn't unnecessarily require one to live where they are. They just have to be 'occupying' it. Its a bit too broad.

That Squattercity thing has got to be one of the most interesting things I have seen today. Its kinda funny. There is an international Squatting Symbol (Wikipedia + 1 )

Camping in abandoned buildings can be fun. What can be more fun is if you "camp" in an old hospital or asylum, and bring one of your "psychically connected" friends with you. That way, the whole time, they're telling you weird ghost stories. Of course, if you don't believe in ghosts, then your friend is a liar, but if you do believe, then that place is all the more interesting.

A tip about doing this in a building local to your home: Know any cops in that town? My friend was begging me to being her to Lakeville Hospital overnight, so I called on a friend who worked 1st shift. He gave the heads up to one of his cop buddies on third shift. We had no problems at all, except for two 1st shift cops visiting just for kicks.

Not all police officers are evil. =]
