| | Bayview Ghost < on 11/6/2007 4:37 AM >
| | | Does any one have pix, info or stories about the abandoned unfinished apartment building known as 'The Bayview ghost' In East York Toronto (Since demoed!) It could be seen by the DVP beside the Valley Brick work's site Unfinished building was officially called the Hampton Park Apartments Started in '50's and demoed '80's or early '90's There doesn't seem to be much info about this place When looking for info (on-line)from city of Toronto archive's only one pic comes up and very little info for it! apparently built without proper permits and city would not service the building i.e water sewage etc etc Yet this building was sitting empty for decades being stuck in law suit limbo! Could not be finished and couldn't be demoed for years because of city 'red tape' I vaguely remember a murder or dead body(s) being found there way back when. Place was used by squatter's drug addicts and homeless people and some early UE'rs. Site has finally been redeveloped into expensive town house's any info would be great! I just find it amazing that there is very little info on this building and yet it remained for decades unfinished Some one has to remember something as it is such a weird/strange story! Very Unique T.O story I think anyhow How about you?

| | | I can remember seeing it in my teen years while travelling down the DVP. The sunset through the building was spectacular if you were in the right place at the right time. From what I recall the building permit was issued in error due to the location being too close to the embankment and unstable ground or something like that. | | | Hard to believe this place is not peaking more people's curiosity as the story behind it is very strange what little info available Millions of $'s wasted even back then True we can't UE site but it was a well known place that no one seems to know a great deal about? Which in turn make's it even more interesting Starting the building without proper permits etc etc? Could this be done now a days Can't even redo your Bathroom with out permits "PERMITS WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' PERMITS" I think a Mike Holmes quote lmao any little story pix or memory etc etc would be greatly appreciated I'd think there would be tons of info on this even from the city archives etc I mean it stood un finished for at least 2 decades which in it's self is quite amazing I wonder if our parents remember more it's worth a shot ask them I have thx all jonesy

| | | Hey man, I'm working on it...I have a bunch of documents/council minutes/etc. so far. The internet has only ONE shot of the place, but I'll keep you posted after I visit the city archives... I've been chatting to some older folk (the place was demo'd 2 years before I was born), and everyone seems to have a story to tell- j.

| | | My family had friends who lived not far from it. I remember going into it once with some of the area kids. There wasn't much to stop anyone. It had a great view of the Don Valley. Funny I looked at the article in the archive but the building looks so small.

...my first guess, and with those dates and details in mind would lead me to believe that construction stopped (and maybe permit revoked) due to flood control rezoning after Hurricane Hazel in 1954. It was in 1960 when lands identified in the flood zone were purchased back by the MNR. ...again, just a guess...

| | | Jane Pitfield's book titled Leaside covers the Ghost a bit and I quote: The partially completed apartment building which stood for many years on the west side of Bayview, south of Nesbitt Drive was knwown locally as the "white Elephant." In 1953, the Hampton Park Company had acquired 28 acres before the Bayview Extension was built. In 1957, Metropoliton Toronto expropriated eleven of these acres. The Governor's Bridge Ratepayers Association appeared before EasT York's council in 1959 and had a bylaw passed to prohibit the clearing of land larger than acre. However, the developer had outwitted them by dividing the property into several parcels, each less than one acre. On the 2nd of October 1959, the developer then applied for two more 105 suite apartment buildings. This was approved by Council without water or sewage service and two lays later, the developer began work, even working through the evening by floodlight. In an interesting turn of events, Council passed a resolution on October 19 to prohibit the construction of sewers on the property and revoked the building permit on November 9th. The ISBN for this book is 1-896219-54-3 if anyone wants to buy it and read a bit more on the site's history. It also contains a lot of other historical notes about the rest of the Leaside/Old East York areas, which may be of interest to the readers here as a lot of the older buildings still stand today. I also remember the Ghost but being a resident on the other side of the Valley, I only remember seeing a tiny little wedge of it on the days when my parents took me to the DQ at Pottery Rd. Hopefully someone else can give a bit more information about the building and maybe show us more images of the building beyond the single image that the City has on its site, although the City Archives does have about 10 images available if anyone feels up for a visit.

| | | Yes this would make sense(Hurricane Hazel not the Miss.. Mayor) but as far as we can find out so far( Thx to Jono and other's) the property was still owned by the original developer's and they tried to finish the building for decades until they gave up(and had it demo'd which was also was tied up in red tape)) and sold to present owner's(I think) which have since redeveloped property some what un successfully at first (Up to '04) into town house's and a retirement home known as True Davidson Acres(after the East York Mayor) and public greenspace thx for the info jonesy

| | | If you feel like visiting the Leaside TPL branch I'm sure the head librarian would love to lend you its history. If not, ask your local librarian. Or ask you Indigo bookseller for help.

| | | Possibly, but it'd have to be late at night (like, after 2:30 and before 5:50)...I'm not on night shifts for another week and a half - plus I'm not going to be here for much longer (max of 2 weeks) so I dunno :s I'll see what I can do though... maybe a high-resolution photocopy, but I dunno how that would turn out.

Exactly, I've done this multiple times... a DSLR on a tripod taking shots of original photos can produce some excellent results.

| | | Unfortunately, building's demolished before the 'internet age' are very difficult to track on-line...the ghost was demolished in 1981, but I've been discussing it with a lot of older folk I know who have plenty of stories- j.
