in 1971 bell canada built a combined office building and switching station on fieldway rd. near islington ave. & bloor st w. this fine space located across the street from islington subway station is currently being converted to lofts. i love south etobicoke.

"The building started life in 1971 as a Bell Canada office and was reborn as a loft conversion. It was built originally for hundreds of employees and visitors, and included many elevators, a parking garage, as well as industrial heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. While the character of the structure will be maintained - from its original thick, industry-standard floors to columns with a radius of nearly 30 inches - it will be modernized inside and out. The suites will range in size from one bedroom to two bedrooms and a den. Ceilings will be 10½ feet in standard units and up to 17 feet in two-storey suites on the 8th floor where the building's mechanical room was originally located."

Did it ever have a tower for connection with the AT&T/Bell Canada Long Lines System?

I thought it was merely an office tower conversion, but you've shown that it's more interesting than that.

Nice. I love the skyline of downtown Toronto. It looks so NON USA.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

agent skelly: i'm not sure if it ever had a tower for connection with the at&t/bell canada long lines. i know there used to be some small tower like antennas on the roof of the building as far as i can remember years ago, when i had a view of the rooftop from the clarica centre [previously the shipp centre]

most of the interesting things like the 8th floor mechanical room have since been demolished to make way for beautiful two storey loft units. if you happen to see the building lately, the 8th floor is the floor that is totally gutted out and awaiting window installation. confirmed occupancy dates are summer 2008 although they don't even have permits yet. unfortunately i never got to see the mechanical room prior to demolition. there was an article in the toronto star in october 2005 that had a picture of the inside of the mechanical room.

cjb: nice picture! i see they [bell] continued the brown aluminum / windows with the brick theme throughout the '70s. the builder of network lofts also purchased another bell canada building located in downtown hamilton [66 bay st. s] and converted it to lofts as well, called 'core lofts'. the building at 66 bay st. s did not look like the buildings we have pictures of though. it was a light coloured building and it wasn't square / cube shaped.

u25680: i love the skyline of downtown toronto as well, but please take note the small picture next to my username is not an 'actual' photograph of the toronto skyline... it is a rendered photograph of what toronto's skyline will likely look like in approx. 10 years when all the buildings / skyscrapers that are currently approved by the city are finally built.
