| | You can buy CHEAP night vision goggles now < on 11/25/2008 7:17 PM >
| | | I don't know how long it lasts, but at Target and Walmart right now they have night vision (infrared) goggles in the toy department for only $50! I bought one and I must say it's worth it. Just don't expect it to be top of the line like what the military uses, but it's pretty decent. It takes 5 AA batteries.

| | | That is a good question. The only reason I would buy these would be to assist my mother in spying on her neighbours. Are they suitable for that purpose?

Yeah, that's what the package says. Also, they might be able to see orbs with. I tried them upstairs in my room last night when I got them, and didn't see any wierd spheres flying around. But as soon as I got halfway down the stairs to the basement, I quickly started seeing circular objects flying around. I don't know much about paranormal stuff (even though I spent a considerable amount of time on GameFAQs' P/C board for several years), but I've seen pictures of orbs, and they looked like them. Also, I don't think what I saw were dust particles because these things looked like the size of baseballs, and they were flying fast. And they weren't water droplets cuz there wasn't any water around. But I would venture a guess that they will see as far as the IR light ranges. I understand you can buy infrared lamps which might increase the range. I think they have those for photography, which don't cause red eye.

What would a situation be like? Probably, because they range a decent distance. Probably not clear across a neighborhood or field, but maybe across a yard. I have yet to test them outside at night. It would be awkward and difficult to use them to take pictures with. For that, I would probably recommend just getting an IR lamp and taking a picture using that light. Note: You can see IR light with your bare eye, I don't know why people say it's invisible. It's invisible to see light from it reflected off of objects, but you can see the IR LEDs when they're on. They look just like dim red LEDs.

Chill out Scully, I'm just posting a review of my experience testing them, and I urge you to place the emphasis on "might" because I clearly saw them. Hell they might have just been dust particles, this is my first time using IR goggles, so if you're more experienced with them than I am, 1) why'd you ask me, and 2) please enlighten me what they were. The only thing I was trying to do was give an accurate description of my test round with them, so no, I don't think I failed. [last edit 11/25/2008 9:08 PM by Mantis - edited 1 times]

| | | Listen, the guy is really just trying to share a tip on something some users might find useful or at least cool. If you don't agree with the rest of his post, don't bash him for it, because this is NOT the place for religious discussion. If you want to argue whether orbs are real or not go to the religion or ghost/paranormal boards we have here for such discussion. Everybody drop the paranormal thing and get on the subject of night vision goggles please.

| | | You've obviously never tried to purchase a game of laser tag! $60! But yeah, I'd love to have a pair of night vision goggles, just for shit n giggles. And they'd be useful and fun to mess with while camping/night hiking. Anybody else have tips on night vision goggles? [last edit 11/25/2008 10:39 PM by ActionSatisfaction Esq. - edited 1 times]

| | | Christ almighty, I already find gratuitous reasons to use my collection of torches around the house - can you imagine if I had night vision goggles? Hey, actually, they'd be great for checking on the kids at 1am. Nay, they'd be *eseential* for checking on the kids at 1am. What's that, you say? A parent without night vision goggles is a neglectful failure? Hmm, you make a compelling argument.

1 Star Lens are reflective!, March 9, 2008 Title says it all brotha. The lady I was looking at through the window saw my lenses clear as day.

| | | Arstechnica did a mini review on these a while back http://arstechnica...ision-goggles.html They're definitely not true night vision, but they do work and for $50 might be a fun toy to bring draining with you.

| | | Costco had 'em on sale for about $60 last month. They're in the toy section because they are toy-quality & toy-designs!
The best thing about having them is that since they're only good in the dark, you won't get too many people seeing you (an adult...) wearing them & laughing & pointing at you. Please, by all means, buy them & give us a review of how they work in operational UE environments, not just the kiddie back yards & bedrooms the marketing literature shows.

| | | Will, I just want to let you know that you caused me pain and discomfort when I saw those pictures because I was drinking a Pepsi when I started laughing and the pop came out my nose Those were hilarious! There's also a switch on there that lets you toggle between black and white and green monochrome. There is a little switch in the form of a dial that lets you increase the intensity of the IR. The only complaint I have about the goggles is that it has a narrow field of vision, but maybe that's normal with these things. Oh, and the eye piece that has the little screen that shows the images is on the right side. The left side sticks out in front making it look like it also has something, but it's nothing, but it flips out so you can see normally with your left eye. It actually fits very comfortably over your head and face. I'd still personally rather use a plain ol' mag lite over these, so I'm going to return them, but I still think they're well worth the money, especially for amateurs or hobbyists like us.
