Does anyone deal with drains that are completely blocked by thick ice walls underneath manholes? How do you go about breaking through them?

See photo for example, sorry my photography skills are lacking.

That looks ridiculously awesome. It's unfortunate that your draining is being ruined by nature and it's cold-ness, but really. If weather stopped me from ever UEing, I wish it was something as awesome as a random solid wall of ice.

If you're having a stressed out day remember the sloth: They don't do shit and they haven't gone extinct; I'm sure you can afford to take a nap...

Ice axe. This is probably water drippings, and not likely to be too solid. Unfortunately, it's still solid ice, and it'll take you a while to chip through even if you find a weak point. Sledgehammer is probably yer best bet, unless it's a long haul with it (only 12 lb right?)

Lol, good old Triple Helix. Id rather go thru it with an ice pick in winter than when its pissing cold turdy water in summer. I ended up on my arse last time.

Try studded waders. Most drains are only frozen for the the first 100 or so metres from an out/infall... Although in places like Edmonton in Canada where it gets down to -45, yeah you just gotta get teh ice skates.

Big Drayyynes!
