Reading Drain Maps
< on 2/13/2009 3:01 AM >

I recently got my hands on about 8 local storm drain system maps. Only problem is, I'm having a hard time understanding the actual maps. I understand the general area and stuff, just not some of the drawings. Also, I haven't found a way to find the size of the pipes on the map. Any help is appreciated!

Hey, out of curiosity, did you just go to the city and ask for them? I'm not sure if my city will just do that for me-- I'm trying to work up the nerve to tell them I'm studying urban hydrology or something and see what they say...

A similar excuse worked for my local people to get steam tunnel maps.

Just e-mail them. i've done it twice. The first time, I told them I needed if for my GIS class. The second time I sent this:

"Hello. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to send me a PDF map of all the storm drains in Richmond . Thank you."

The same day I sent it, I got the maps.

However, I have the orginal problem of not being able to figure out exactly what they mean.

The planning commission is closed for the weekend, but I will definitely shoot them an email on Monday. Yesterday I went to the Georgia Historical Society and got photocopies of a 1907 map showing major additions to the drainage system!

It doesn't seem as though the numbers have anything to do with the sizes of the drains. CB is usually the code for catch basin. Maybe DI is the acronym for drain inlet?

Yeah, I will post them when I get home. And Dick Winter, those maps are a lot different from the ones I recieved. I mean, ALOT. And to get maps just go to your city/county's website and look for the Utilities section. There will be an email address. Just email that person... The first time I spoke to them, they sent me 9 maps.

i just sent this:

I'm studying the watersheds, streams, rivers, and storm water drain systems of the area and was wondering if you could send me any maps you may have regarding any of the afore mentioned items. I am particularly interested in how the storm water drainage system connects into the natural systems (i.e. rives, streams, etc) so any information you could provide on that subject would be very helpful indeed. If at all possible I would prefer
to use email so a .pdf packet would be ideal. Sorry if this is a hassle.

so lets see how it goes!

That should be fine... But who did you send that to? They may reply with someone elses email address that takes care of the drain records ie. The Department of Utility Records.

Here we go.

I just don't understand how to gauge the size of them, and the drawings at the bottom of the pages are confusing. Any help would be great.

That is pure drain nerd porn! Being classy, I will resist the urge to make jokes about the "FAP" numbers listed through it.

Hehehe. All I need is one of those "nerds" to drop by and explain all this. And I was a bit surprised they sent all of this with such little effort on my part.

well, from what I can see, it looks like all the information is set up in tables, with marker indicators placed all over the map pointing to the features that link back to the tables.

Could you get a larger picture of just one of them, so that we could help out a little bit in cracking the code, as it's just a little too small to get any good detail from it? The first one would do just fine to figure out what's going on- I can already see manhole details, inlet description etc. and I'm sure pipe diameter and such in stuck somewhere in there (might be structure schedule)

update: if you can't get hosting anywhere for a larger size (as you're using photobucket), I'd be willing to throw one up on my google storage and post the link... I just fill it up with crap anyway.
