I went there a few weeks ago, saw the holes in each building, but i didn't go inside since the new psych was pretty busy with cars pulling in and out all the time. I took quite a few pictures from the outside...heres one of each of the remaining buildings. They are buildings 22 and 12.

It's all about taking away the stigma of the old days when they referred to places likes this as "mental asylums". You gotta admit, saying "they took me to Ontario Shores" sounds almost like a resort vacation compared to "they locked me in a cold, dark dungeon at the mental asylum".

No one who mattered EVER referred to these places as 'Mental Asylums'. If they did they were fucking morons.

*Mental Hospital
*Insane Asylum

Ya' gotta pick one and don't mix it, because they are mutually exclusive.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Yeah, if you go on google maps now it still shows all the buildings, but when you go there its completely different, theres a subdivision really close to #12 now.

I understand what you mean, but in fairness to fedge everybody has at some point mixed the words up...Mental Hospital, Insane Hospital, Insane Asylum, Mental Asylum...etc. I'm not saying this is a routine thing...nor is it a good thing, but it does still happen from time to time. Besides, when you think about it nobody even calls them "Mental Hospitals" or "Insane Asylums" anymore. The most recent names were just "Psychiatric Hospital" or "Mental Centre/Mental Health Centre".

Yeah i noticed that too. Apparently google maps are a little outdated and from what i can tell a few years outdated.

Yeah they must be, i noticed my house on there with a car in the driveway that i got rid of a few years ago. It also shows my roof with old colour shingles, so in my area its gotta be atleast 3 or 4 years old.

Oh yeah I know, common mistake... I meant that no one with a shade of knowledge about these places would mix the wording up - not the staff, not the boards and I think also we as explorers should know better too.

I wasn't trying to cite "mental asylum" as being anything other than an example. By the way, there's NO rule on what these places are called. They're just nasty places that otherwise get nice names in present day...

The Google maps satellite images in my area are at least 5 years old because I can see buildings on those images that were demolished in 2005.

I've heard that a google map can be anywhere from 2-7 years old depending on the area. I would think some are updated more often than others...probably for security reasons, but nonetheless whether it's true or not it does make sense. Unless anyone can go back farther than 7 years? Please let me know cause i can't seem to find a definitive answer to this.

Untrue. In actual fact;

"Mental Asylum" Does not make SENSE in English*, does not act as a qualified descriptor and is a hash of nomenclature from two separate and distinct time periods!

So yeah, apart from those rules.

/Not getting at you personally fedge matey; just my pet peeve.

On the subject of WPH, I have some flowery wallpaper from the place at home, even though I've never personally visited!

Chris...

*You can't claim Asylum from your Mental state - it's ever present!! The Victorians DID think you could claim Asylum from insanity, however.

Apparently with Google Maps and the Durham Region, I heard a few stories that the Durham Region gov't is always the last to give Google updated aerial photos of the entire area. You can get the most current images direct from the Durham Region gov't if you want to pay.

Yeah actually your right, I remember i had to go get a building permit for a shed and they had to look over aerial photos to check the lot coverage, and the photos were taken in a different season than google earth's pictures, i could tell by the leaves.

Here's Durham Region's own map page (IE only). It looks to be a year old at the least.
