| | UE Videos? < on 10/20/2009 5:53 PM >
| | | What are people's opinions of UE videos? I've seen a few on YouTube and shot several myself, but haven't uploaded any yet. I'm just curious if people think they're hokey, cool or if their opinions are more based on the video itself? I was just watching one I did of the Westinghouse Factory in Cleveland and what I liked about it was that it put some of the locations from still photos more into perspective. In other words, you understand a bit more where a photo was taken in relation to the rest of the building.

| | | Videos can be a fun way to document a place, just as photography is. I've made a few videos myself, and will probably make more in the future.

| | | Some are good. Most are bad. The only ones that are sticking out in my head right now are one of the now mostly demo'd Polaroid factory by Desmet, some stuff by fiftyone_eggs, and some more artsy ones by BriansBrains. I made a similar thread to this a while ago, but I think its archived now. edit: Here is the thread [last edit 10/20/2009 6:11 PM by willskith - edited 2 times]

| | | I think they're interesting, usually. Unless done by a total douche, and usually they're not. I saw this one a while back, done by one of (I think) the better people making vids on Youtube: http://www.youtube...atch?v=CLnJe4Wqr74 I thought it was kinda cool. As long as they're not being completely blatant about the location (i.e. drawing more attention than they should)/breaking shit, I usually enjoy them.

| | | I'm a fan of Met State (http://www.lumenec...Papciak/index.html) myself, but it's more of an artsy-styled video than one documenting an abandonment. Unfortunately, that's the only source I can find... and it's at like 1/4 resolution of the actual video was at.

| | | Documentaries such as the one done by Melody, I find enjoyable. I don't generally watch actual UE videos unless they're from my own neck of the woods. By that same token I wouldn't really expect someone to watch my videos if they're from another part of Canada or beyond. I take my own videos, they are somewhat unsteady, not-edited whatsoever and you're lucky if you find one with accompanying music. The point isn't to be professional (video is a low priority for me), it's to have another piece of media (action) to go with the location for when the time comes that it is demolished.

| | | Almost all UE videos consist of either overly shaky footage and some awful nu-metal track *or* overly shaky footage and some awful post-rock track. Take your pick. Either way you'll be bored. Oh yeah, the majority are also poorly edited and run 5-15 minutes longer than necessary. You also won't learn anything about the place being shown, but there will be an informative disclaimer at the very beginning stating that the abandoned building you are about to see is really dangerous and illegal to enter.

| | | I've been working on a documentary for over a year now on abandoned mental hospitals. I've kind of come to a dead halt since $$ is tight, I wonder if I'll ever finish it at this point. Plus everything I shot so far has been standard def on my Canon XL2, I have since sold that camera and I have gone HD... I always wondered if it would make a shit of difference to anyone if half of the doc was shot in standard def and the other half in HD... prolly not, but it bugs the hell out of me. There are many reasons why I wanted to document these places but one of the reasons I wanted to do this was cause I was tired of all the shaky camcorder footage, no dialog... kinda wanted to do something a bit more solid. Hopefully one day I can finish it.

| | | I'm going to piggy back on this thread and add my own question. I don't explore with a camera because it's just too bulky and screws up the experience for me. But I often wish I had some kind of good documentation of the exploring that I do other than other people's pictures. So I was thinking about the possibility of using some kind of helmet cam (preferably minus the helmet, maybe on a headband or something?) or something. What I'd be looking for is a somewhat small, light camera that can record many hours of video. Doesn't need to be high quality or anything. I could record sound separately using an audio recorder in my pocket and combine them later. Being water proof or water resistant would be a huge advantage. It would have to have pretty decent battery life (preferably from a battery pack in the back like most good headlamps have) and no LEDs on it that would give me away when hiding in the darkness. Having a headlamp built in as well would be incredible. That's pretty specific and I guess I'm unlikely to find a camera that fits all of those criteria...but does anyone know of anything at all like that?

| | | I can't say I've seen anything done by an amateur UE videographer that was worth wasting my time on. That's not to say decent videos don't exist, they just seem few and far between... But then I can't stand watching bouncy crap videos, even if it were my own son's birthday; so I don't tolerate shit videos well!! As for shooting them, I wouldn't. I find taking stills already distracts me too much sometimes, capturing video would just totally destroy the experience. I can't be alone on this right??? | | | Here is a short low res clip of the doc I am working on. I'm sure it will get bashed to shit, but whatever... I'm not a seasoned videographer or narrator, just trying my hand at this whole 'Documentary' thing. We'll see what happens. Any of these locations look familiar to u guys? http://vimeo.com/7177614 PS You gotta give it up for Ray walking on the 'about to collapse any minute' floor. I was scared as hell up there with my fat ass and all my gear. And yes... humping all that gear around and always having ur eye in the viewfinder def takes away from the explore... I do not recommend it to anyone.

I thought it looked cool! I'd have shown a bit more of the outsides of some of the buildings in question, though. You say that they're some of the most amazing buildings ever constructed, but the only outside shot is of a rather ordinary - albeit large - building. Did you also do Echoes of Forgotten Places?

http://www.youtube...atch?v=iygrNjQ7Cdc I'm sure it's not the best option. But it's a start for you Edit: As to keep on the original topic. I typically record most of my outings. I try to make it a bit artsy, but I make sure I keep the full documentation effect. [last edit 10/21/2009 1:42 PM by CagedPsycho - edited 1 times]

hey thanks! ha.. actually 93 is a really cool building, prolly not the best shot of it, but I have a few interviews w/ a former nurse and with Aerofennec with 93 in the back drop so I plan on showing more of it and I also have some exterior shots of some other cool places I visited that will also be included in the actual doc. This clip is kinda of a teaser clip if you will, so I don't get to show everything in it. And to answer your other question, I did not create Echoes of Forgotten Places but I look forward to seeing it for sure!

It sounded like the same narrator, and the font used in the titles at the end looked the same, that's why I asked. As for EoFP, it's good but not great. The photography is excellent, but I think it kind of lacks focus. In other words, it's not just about the buildings, or the people who explore them, or any one thing in particular. Still definitely worth a look, though. Netflix has it.
