There's lots of articles on the internets describing how to make your own.

http://www.instruc...de-release-buckle/

I'd incorporate at last one quick release buckle allowing you to loop the camera strap through a tripod leg easier.

I like this about the Survival Straps:

IF YOU USE IT - WE'LL REPLACE IT

We are pretty sure that when you receive your SurvivalStrap gear, you are going to love it. We also realize that if faced with an emergency situation, you may hesitate to unravel your SurvivalStrap because you will not want to depart with it's awesomeness. So here is the deal. If you do unravel your SurvivalStrap and use it in an emergency situation, we will send you a new one. Free. Yes, Free. All you will pay is the shipping cost to get a new one to you. The only thing we want in return is your detailed story of how it was used.

If I made one, I'd be like 'Daaaaaamn... If I use this... I'm going to have to make another...".

Edit - I mean I'd obviously use it if it was a real emergency, but if it would just be really handy when nothing else was available I'd think twice.

Someone posted something about these a while ago. I showed it to my wife and she had her Cub Scouts make one as a craft project. They're all wearing them now, and have started a trend at school.

These are rampant with the deployed. I use a river bar weave just to be different. The upside is you have rope on your wrist, but in all honesty after a few weeks being bound like that it looses some of its strength. Don't be thinking your gonna climb out of something with these.

If I ever get to another OPEX and have para-cord I will make some up. You can get para-cord in any color now days as well, so it's probably better just to buy and learn how to do it then waste money on shipping.

It's hard to find many colors, though. I looked around and could only find white and red. I bought olive drab from www.uscav.com

Sure, online you can find it in all the colors of the rainbow. I was talking about in a store somewhere.

Yeah, someone told me "Why not just stick 10' of paracord in your pocket?" Because it doesn't look as cool?

So how long does it take to unravel one of those in an emergency situation?

I think the idea is to create something useful, a belt, keychain, etc, so that the paracord serves more than one purpose.

Also, I think you're more likely to wear a cool bracelet, ou of coolness, than putting a length of cord in your pocket.
