Ice filled train tunnel

Weird, I'd known this tunnel was somewhere in this area for a decade, long before I'd ever been into this hobby. But even when I read about it's location a few months ago I wasn't at all interested to find it despite the fact that I often visit my old hometown [two towns over].

Anyways, a couple days back I had gone to MA to get my car fixed up for cheap and got lost despite the idiotic fact I lived here only two years back. Strangely, while driving down a busy road, I just happened to look to my left and see the entrance to this tunnel in a hill.

A trudge through some terrible snow...and I mean just awful, I exited through the other side and never came so close to passing out in my life...got some good shots. The odd thing is that the tunnel starts like a cathedral and ends like a cavern. Funds run out?

The ice formations were incredible so I took many shots, doesn't seem like it'd be so great in the summer.

Unfortunately, as you probably know by now, my camera is a hunk'a junk. Sometimes amazing shots are just blurry and beyond that the place was dark as hell. I don't have the Photoshop skills to brighten some of these without butchering the light coming in from the exit -_-

Anyhow, enjoy!

Very cool - like the formations inside a limestone cave, only more ephemeral.

Nice shots, I think we can all relate to having to use a POS camera at one time or another. At least you got some good ones

I know this place; you are right it isn't that cool in the summer. In shot #4 I can see the spot the geocache for the site is hidden in. >.> I mean... um... geocaching is lame

Nice!

You were talking about stone work on one side and raw rock on another... I've seen a lot of train tunnels with the same pattern and I believe it has something to do with the direction the rock sits in the veins in the mountains.

I like the ice pictures. Very creepy.

maybe it was just for cargo, and when passenger trains wanted to go through they made the people get out and walk to the other side, overland?

north of Port Henry NY, 70ft from CP Rail's Bridgeline tracks, taken in 2004. This tunnel was blasted out, finished and never used.

Well I lol'd.

No idea what types of trains, the tracks aren't even in the tunnel anymore and the bridge, I assume, must've been there before the creation of the dam, which is a few hundred feet away. Maybe they destroyed the tracks to build it?

Interesting about the change of tunnel structure. It's Massachusetts, I thought they just ran out of money halfway through :p

Oh, ZING.

I like this place. The train tunnel in my neck of the woods is better, but this one's not too bad.
