| | The Genosha hotel (and others) < on 3/11/2011 6:18 PM >
| | | I am not a full member yet, I am wondering if the buildings in that area of Oshawa have been indexed yet. I am in the area, and I would love to see the photos of the future hotel and the abandoned plaza across the street before I make my move on it.
Also does anyone have pics of 61 Charles st. in Oshawa (beside the GM center) while it was abandoned? I would love to see the before pics to see what they did with the place.

| | | They've been "working" on the hotel for a long time now. When restored it would be amazing cause it had some good structure when it was still the strippers (don't ask, weird story that involved a lady and a popsicle). If you go for a drink, avoid hitting the Atria... hit Rileys instead. That building next to GM Ctr is now part of UOIT. I don't have any pics of what it used to look like though. They did keep some old feel to it though.

| | | The Genny may be dormant but it's not abandoned. I'd be very careful about trying to access that place.
The Rookie forum is your friend, BTW. Asking for POEs is frowned upon so the best way is to get out there exploring and earning your cred by your own experience.

| | | The building on Athol (next to GM Center) was the Alger Press. It's been there for ~100 years, and its currently being renovated as classrooms for UOIT. As for Genosha, renovations appear to have ceased again, at least from what I can tell from outside. There are also some residential houses on the south side of Gibb St between Park and Centre which have been disconnected from hydro (perhaps as expropriated to make way for a wider Gibb St?) The one abandoned building in Oshawa that's always held my attention is the old Knob Hill Farms. Knob Hill moved out sometime circa 2000, it reopened as a discount warehouse type deal for a summer, and then closed again. Yet, the property still has an active security/alarm system, with IR Motion sensors on the EXTERIOR of the building, near the entrances. Tripping them sets off a blaring alarm inside.

i lapped this building when the snow was almost two feet high, but ran out of time, or rather my attention was diverted to a more pressing matter. motion sensors outside, you say? huh. [last edit 4/7/2011 3:54 PM by jerm IX - edited 1 times]

| | | Just thought I'd add my two cents. I work for a roofing company and I received some plans for the Genosha Hotel. The plan is to add a 10 storey residence behind the hotel. There are also plans for interior work to the Genosha....I believe. I have a close contact with the Contractor doing the work, so I'll see if I can get pics of the inside of the hotel. I've attached a couple of the drawings I received. Thanks.

Oshawa really wants to connect Gibb with Olive (see maps within) as a light curve extending SE from the eastern end of Gibb. This will result in dozens of homes being expropriated by the City.
I'd love to explore this place.

| | | I'd love to check out Knob Hill too, but I've heard security is pretty assertive. I'm also really glad that the Alger Press building is being re-purposed by the University. It's a cool building that I'd hate to see be demolished. Back in High school it was being used as an art gallery, and then there was talk of making it into condo/loft housing.

| | | Since the (my) university is expanding in that area, is there any likeliness of the uni taking over the Genny? Any ideas where the new courthouse is going to be. All I was told is that it was going to be across the street from the Regent Theater.

| | | Far as I understood, the Genosha was being renovated to use as student housing for the downtown parts of UOIT, by an outside company. Also, the new courthouse is already built and active, on the north side of Bond St, across from Anderson's Funeral Home. It was defaced back in August 2010 to the tune of 6 digits of damage, guy was running past it with a hammer and smashed 11 panes of the glass windows (roughly 6x20' windows). I know, because I was standing in the parking lot of the funeral home when it happened. As for security at Knob Hill, its not difficult to get onto the property. There are a number of breaks in the fencing. Get up to the doors (on the east-facing side of the building, anyway), and there is a CCTV camera (active? who knows?), and a Passive IR sensor right there. I was looking at the boarded up windows, complete with broken glass on the doors, looked up and saw the IR sensor, followed a second or two later by its indicator LED, and an alarm siren blaring away inside. I bolted, not wanting to be around if/when someone showed up to check on it. In discussing this building months ago with another UER member, they said they live in the area and regularly set that alarm off walking their dog on the property.

| | | So, the courthouse is where the motor sales building was? Ok, I usually don't have to go that far east. I guess I can check it out, public areas are easy to explore. And I really hope the genny gets turned into resses, they are needed at the downtown campus.

| | | Ummm Ya we did. My bad, I missed a door from the inside. With that damn alarm going off I could have missed an open safe full of gold. Also someone went in through the window from outside, they made a big mess. Pic's to follow as soon as I get my Agfa happy micro 110mm from daughters house.

| | | I still don't understand the logic behind that alarm. There's a metric buttload of sensors connected to it (you mentioned 4 corners of each room, plus laser trips in the warehouse area, plus external IR sensors, and reed switches on doors), but no one ever comes to investigate the alarms...
