Why? You're in just as much trouble for trespassing in a building without boarded windows/doors.

Generally not.

| | | Don't break anything, don't take anything extremely important [won't lie, I have some small oddities from houses like an old license plate or unique post card], restore POE if it was an opened window or whatever, don't blow the location to the public. Respect. It's a must.

| | | ive taken small things. like glass bottles and projector signs and glass(simplex). i also like the american journals of psychiatry. i also have a speculum and roller skates. as well as a mental aptitude shape fitting test(triangle, square, circle) it all depends on how bad the stuff is rotting. oh i also carried a 50lbs typewriter 2 miles on my back from one hospital. it was the only one i good condition, all the rest were covered in crap and mold/dust. it still works, just a little rusty. you basically just dont want to get caught trespassing with stolen goods. thats a pretty big charge.

| | | When it comes to taking things, I follow a few strict rules, one of which is not really to brag about it online lest we attract trophy hunters. Basically, I won't take anything from an abandonment that I would feel uncomfortable taking from the equivalent place if it were not abandoned. So, things like a box of matches from a big basket of them, or a business card. But I find talking about it too much breeds novices who are always looking for something to steal every time, which sucks. One maybe odd rule I have is that I won't make a move on a girl while exploring, unless we're in a serious relationship. I don't want to come off as a guy who lures girls to abandonments and then puts the moves on them. If I actually intend to I'll just save it for the bar afterwards. And there's always a bar afterwards.

| | | Okay, your confession kinda greased the wheels a bit ;) My apartment is a bit urbex-deco now. They're all small but subtly cool things...'lab' is above my bathroom, a small ampere gauge makes my entertainment center more confusing, keys may hang from poster pushpins. I do have a tie from my first explore, an asylum I found by accident before I knew what this hobby was. I used to wear it to work and job interviews every day until I get a more professional looking one.

| | | I never break in or steal anything, it just seems wrong. If you're going somewhere to enjoy it then why damage it for the next explorer coming behind you to do the same thing? There have been times I've been tempted to cut a lock or remove a board from a window, but I've stopped myself because I'd rather not go to jail. If you're okay with it and the possibility of being arrested with extra chargers doesn't bother you, then I guess it's a question of your own personal morals and how far you're willing to go.

| | | I've only taken things if I knew the place was going to be Demo'd.. I mean - if they're already going to reduce it to a pile of junk I might as well save it for someone who would actually look after it.

Duh. Because if I experience it and you don't, it means that I beat you. Take only matches. Leaves only ashes.

| | | For me it's risk versus reward. As far as souvenirs, I ask myself, "what will I do with this?". If I can use it, it's mine.

| | | I try my best to keep the place exactly as I found it. When I go, I'm there to take photos and document the place if its gone one day. If there is no entry point, I just explore the outside or what I can see through the windows. And I would never take anything, even when tempted by stuff I know I was the last to see (there was this cool 70s panorama poster and a drawer full of neat looking ashing straps in a place that was going to be demolished soon). I even try to avoid leaving any tracks while I go along so no one even can tell anyone was there.

| | | I agree with what people are saying. You’re a guest. Leave it like you found it. For me, it’s about exploring and experiencing new places and documenting them. EDIT: on second thought, if a place is about to be demolished, I think that’s a slightly different situation. In that case, I don’t really see a moral issue with breaking a lock on a place that’s about to be wrecked anyway. In my experience, I’ve never done it though. There’s so many cool places to explore… if a place is locked, I pass [last edit 2/5/2012 8:36 PM by SwitchSwag - edited 1 times]
