| | | Where do you get your info from? < on 12/28/2011 3:33 AM >
| | | Some of you guys post some great info about the locations you post and I was just wondering where does your info come from? I know the obvious Google, Wiki, etc. but some of the info that gets posted here doesn't seem like its just some COPY PASTE from a website. Do you talk to locals, or is it word of mouth?

| | | I usually (when I can) do all of the above and the local library. Only about 1% of the worlds information is online. But at the same time it's usually the coolest 99%.

| | | Numerous times iv spotted something interesting on google earth, and ventured to it. Even if it ends up a disappointment, the trek there is fun. Keep an eye out in your local paper too, you never know what they're going to do a story on, maybe a heritage building that someones trying to save for example.

I don't know why, but I never thought of the library. That's a good idea!

| | | Local historical societies contain a wealth of information. Chat up one old guy at a local museum/point of interest and he'll tell you more about what to look for in 30 minutes than hours of searching online. They also tend to know things like who owns a building/piece of land so you know if you're dealing with state/town or a private entity.

If you're in a big city do the central library. LA's history department...damn! I can find newspapers from nearly every ghost town back 150 years.

| | | I haven't been exploring long. And haven't done a decent write up ever. But, I have had a chance to run into a few old guys at or around abandonments that love to talk, and they have a wealth of personal history that's wonderful. I bumped into an old coal miner at a coal breaker, and a fellow at a mental institution both who used to work at the sites and the info.I got from them was better than anything I'd ever find online.

| | | Books, old county plat maps (can be found at the courthouse or State Records), newspapers, stories from old-timers, and most importantly, letters and info left behind at the location.

| | | I use the internet for some info, but I also borrow and buy a ton of books as well. Sometimes the search for the good books with the wealth of knowledge can be as fun as exploring the location. Dates, important events, deaths, you name it that shit's out there.... hiding on the shelves. It also helps to know what libraries have what.

| | | quote " old timers " very good source, has lead me to some interesting leads. try local architecture or history clubs, walking tours, those people will be into all the cool stuff and could save you research time. and indeed, the local library is a gold mine.

There's a madness to my methods

| | | Sometimes the news (on TV/online/print media) will say, "So and So Place Dilapidated/Soon to be Renovated/Soon to be Demolished", which helps out with a potential location. The journalists generally provide some quick background on the spot as well, so you can assess whether or not it's worth your time. [last edit 12/28/2011 10:43 PM by superphoenix - edited 1 times]
