And if they were there with permission and didnt actually have any weapons, they would have nothing to fear from the police showing up. When I was 8yrs old I had 5 cruisers show up at our house on christmas morning because a neighbour across the ravine from us saw me playing in the backyard with a toy gun. He told them I was shooting deer (lol). They showed up in full force, but left pretty quickly when they realized no crime had been committed.

Taking action and being mistaken is better than not taking action. Somewhere out there, a property owner could be thanking you for making the effort.
After all, we'd do the same for an occupied dwelling if someone were walking out with a television set and bolted when they saw you.

Nope, you get their descriptions and vehicles, pictures if possible, then wait for the cops or owners to offer a reward. Then you call the cops and send them your pics.

These are the nosy, nothing-better-to-do-busy-bodies you have to worry about. 9/10 they will call the cops on you with an exaggerated story to get a response, and for some reason they tend to always live next to the spaces you are trying to enter.
I also don't know how you can find running into scrappers pleasurable/amusing Neil... can you imagine if the police showed up, and they had criminal records? Sooner or later these thieves are going to figure out the explorers who they keep running into are carting expensive camera/video gear worth much more the junk they are spending a whole afternoon cutting.

I look less favourably on the one's with professional cutting tools, who drive a brand new Dodge Ram V10 than I do on the addicts who strip the plastic off wires. I have encountered numerous scrappers in Detroit who seem to be trying to eke out an existence from salvage and I don't fault them at all. Needless to say, a scrapper in suburban/rural Ontario is likely to be much less destitute than someone living in an economically depressed area in the U.S.
