Suspicious Fire at Abandoned School in Bowmanville

"We've had a problem with trespassing. Children go through a window or a back door... I don't know what the interest is. There's nothing there," said Fire Chief Gord Weir.

Police are investigating a suspicious fire last night in Clarington at an abandoned school building and are seeking the identity of the suspect(s) involved.

On Monday January 16, 2012 at approximately 6 p.m. officers from East Division responded to a reported fire incident at an abandoned school building located on Queen Street in Bowmanville. The abandoned building had been vacant and boarded-up for several years. A witness reported seeing unexplained flames and contacted emergency services immediately.

Clarington Fire Services extinguished the fire in short time and no injuries resulted from the incident. Debris within the school was lit on fire, resulting in the damages to the interior.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and the police investigation is ongoing. No suspect information is available at this time.

Anyone with new information about this investigation is asked to contact the East Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1611. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or on the website at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Can also picture Fire Chief Gord Weir saying...

"If it weren't for those meddling kids!"

anyways, thats a shame. but given the amount of vandalism to the building, it was inevitable.

If it's the school I'm thinking, we where just there 2 days ago and found no sign (or smell) of fire in there.

So much for a fire. Just got back from there. Looked fine.

It's not where it goes, it's where it can lead you to.

A tiny pile of ashes in the auditorium. Nothing worthy of note really.

Who owns this school now? They are extremely derelict as they do not reboard up the windows or have security measures. An eyesore...

The Alpine Gang are also racist, they apparently hate 'nigers'.
Gotta love the irony of misspelled graffiti in a school, maybe they should have left it open.

What I meant by "eyesore" is to the surrounding community...its ugly as sin. apparently the place sold for millions, yet they are doing nothing to preserve it. Odd. If anyone has real estate connections, please look up the owners for me. I am certain that there is a lot of history buried in the depths of that building...parts are extremely old...

All things considered, besides partial broken windows, and lower level boarding, the place doesn't look bad outside.
