There is the Croton Reservoir, dammed by the Croton Dam, below the dam is Croton Gorge Park, and six miles down stream is the Hudson River. The aqueduct is to the east, and although it's "abandoned", in times of drought it is still used as a backup.

Type: Dam

People who like to go tunnel diving would have a field day - this is where the Croton Aqueduct begins. Less adventurous ones can follow the Aqueduct Trail from Croton Gorge Park (below the dam) and follow it into Yonkers. The waterfall is amazing, although not really abandoned or explorable.

Construction started in 1892 and was completed in 1906. The dam was built to replace the original Croton Dam which was outdated before its completion. The new dam provided a barrier to the large complex of reservoirs making up the Croton watershed. The town of Southeast was flooded in the mid 1800's to create the original Croton Reservoir, and the Croton Aqueduct was constructed which brought water in to the rapidly growing NYC population. Water traveled from here some 40 miles south into The Bronx and Manhattan. The roadway across the top was closed in 1996 after increased terrorist activity, as was the road across Kensico Dam some 15 miles away. The proximity of this area to NYC makes it a plausable target... you see the problem. From the web... The New Croton Dam, which will celebrate its centennial on New Years 2007, is the second-largest hand-hewn stone structure in the world. (The largest is the Great Pyramid in Egypt.) Many of Westchester County's Italian-American inhabitants are descended from workers who came over to build the dam.

The original bridge over the spillway was replaced in the 70's with an ugly steel structure - it is in the process of being replaced with a structure similar to the original.
