"The total length of the bridge including the north viaduct is 1,823 metres (5,890 feet). The length including approach spans is 1,517.3 m (4,978 ft), the main span alone is 472 m (1,550 ft), the tower height is 111 m (364 ft), and it has a ship's clearance of 61 metres. Prospect Point in Stanley Park offered a good high south end to the bridge, but the low flat delta land to the north required construction of the extensive North Viaduct." Where do you begin to list the interesting features of one of Vancouver's leading landmarks? Some might say it is tall. Others might say it takes cars over a body of water.

"The construction began on March 31 1937. The bridge cost precisely $5,873,837.17 to build. It all began when the Guinness family (of beer fame), decided to invest in land on the North Shore. In 1932, they purchased 4,000 acres of West Vancouver mountain side through a syndicate called British Pacific Properties Ltd. The plan was develop the land and get people to move there. Part of the Guinness plan was to build a bridge over the First Narrows, the existing 2nd Narrows Bridge being deemed to be to far away and “unreliable.” The project proved popular during this depression period, and objections over the fact that the alignment would entail an access road through the heart of Stanley Park were overcome." Godzilla crossing the Pacific ocean to wreck havoc on would-be channel crossers? Irradiated Japanese lizards aside, the bridge is in good shape and probably will survive the tsunami that will consume western North America, unlike us feeble non-bridge entities of flesh and bone. Update Feb 20 2017: A private company is looking at operating guided tours to the top of the bridge. Via the ladder inside the towers. The estimated cost.... 250$ ouch
