Monte Ne was variously a health resort, a political headquarters, a publishing house, a think tank for philosophical luminaries, a place for the education and improvement of civilization itself and a time capsule, a place from which a new civilization would arise after the demise of the present one due to the United States abandonment of the gold standard. Built in Rogers, Arkansas, it was owned and operated by William Hope Harvey. Harvey was an advisor for William Jennings Bryan during his 1896 presidential campaign, during which time he visited Rogers. Impressed with the beauty of the area in 1900 he returned and bought up some of those hills and valleys and springs, specifically a place called "Silver Springs." The name, "Monte Ne", was invented by Harvey and is a corruption of Spanish and Indian meaning "Mountain Water". Monte Ne, which at the time was essentially in the wilderness, had streets, hotels, marked out lots, a bank, golf course, swimming pools and a newspaper. The hotels, Missouri Row and Oklahoma Row, were called the largest log buildings in the world at the time. Visitors came to Monte Ne via a five mile railway system that began in Lowell. Once at Monte Ne they were ferried across a lagoon in a genuine imported Venetian gondola. Harvey planned to build a giant pyramid and encapsulate all of human knowledge. These plans never came to be. Monte Ne went bankrupt in the early 1930s and was closed shortly after Harveys death a few years later. Most of the resort was submerged when Beaver Lake was created in 1964, however a few ruins and the three-story concrete tower of Oklahoma Row remain above water. The tower and other ruins, covered in graffiti, now sit unceremoniously at the edge of Beaver Lake unmarked. Parts of the amphitheater are visibile at various times when the lake recedes. The streets around this are named Pyramid St. and Canal St. in honor of Monte Ne. Harvey's and his son's bodies were interred in a large cement block somewhat pyramid shaped. It had to be moved when the lake was created and now sits in someone's front yard. TONS of additional history on the Wikipedia page, see link below.
