Gallery Description
BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) utilizes boron in conjunction with a neutron beam as a means of destroying tumor cells. Traditionally, the neutron beam has been delivered by a nuclear reactor, but there is ongoing research in the use of particle accelerators to produce the beam. At LBNL, components from a decommissioned particle accelerator injector were used to create a BNCT injector.

The SuperHILAC, a linear accelerator at LBNL, once utilized a 2 MeV Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier injector to produce a supply of particles. This injector (named “Adam”) utilized a pressure vessel to hold the high-pressure gas necessary to insulate it. The pressure vessel was reused as the enclosure for a new ESQ (electrostatic quadrupole) accelerator.

The BNCT injector uses an ion source to provide particles to be accelerated by the ESQ accelerator. Up to 50 mA of 2.5 MeV protons strikes a lithium-7 production target to generate neutrons, which are subsequently used in therapy.

The BNCT injector in this gallery is no longer used. Although it is not part of the Bevalac, it is stored in the building. I wanted to include it in this site because (a) it currently resides in the Bevalac building, (b) it is a particle accelerator, and (c) it’s cool.
