That's where I quit. :-p I couldn't see any maker's name on it, just some German writing. It does look Ford-ish though, especially the air filter assembly

[geekiness]I think I've just worked out what it is, a Ford Cologne V-4. There only seems to be two HT leads leading into the block on this side.[/geekiness]

What the hell are you talking about? What's an HT lead? V-what? (I'm one of those 'turn the key and go' folk)

HT lead - high tension lead, sends spark to the spark plugs in petrol engines. V-4 - 4 cylinders arranged in a 'V'. :-D

Oh yeah, there's a third HT on this side hiding a little behind the breather pipe.

Put the key in, make sure it has gasoline (or Petrol) & it should go...if it doesnt, off to the mechanics it goes!

Incidentally, this auxilliary petrol engine (the main one is electric) is the one that CairnGorm Mountain Ltd claim doesn't exist, and is one of their reasons for originally not using the chairlift. This was because of Health and Safety reasons, that if there was a powercut or whatever people wouldn't be able to get off the line. Not so..

Sorry, I didn't mean that they claim it doesn't exist - they have never denied its existence. But some of the lifties (probably didn't know any better) didn't seem to think it was there.

Clearly it doesn't exist - I mean it's not like we can look at a picture of it on the internet or anything! :-))
