  before the digital age, a given shift would load a new, circular piece of graph paper into the machine and the machine would record performance/flow/whatever of a given piece of equipment with an ink tip (like a lie detector or seismic recorder). Instead of being in a linear pattern, it would be circular moving in or out of the paper during the shift/day.
Nowadays, these have been replaced by APACS systems, Honeywell recorders, et al...
