Douglas Coupland once wrote about Canadian's ongoing obsession with the weather. His reply: If you lived in a place where mother nature was putting forth a concentrated effort to kill you for 6 months of the year, you would be obsessed with the weather as well. I really like that quote.

the Adirondacks in New York is very much like that only the weather is trying to kill you 10 months out of the year instead of Canadas' 6... April and September is basically when mom nature takes a break from trying to off us all.

if the adirondacks were their own state, our state bird would either be a black fly or a mosquito... they can render flesh from your body in under 45 seconds!!!

There are a few good stories of the arctic of Pierre Trudeau not being bothered by the bugs, excercising naked in fact, while his companions sweated it out in the tent.
