World Trip 2002 - Liverpool

The Williamson's Tunnels, Liverpool

For a long time I have wanted to see the Williamson's tunnels in Liverpool. Ever since seeing their web site I have admired the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels for their rescorcelfulness and the way they have managed to get their local council on side. They can explore the tunnels with permission, yet it is still an adventure.

.

Entrance to the Paddington section of the tunnels which is still being excavated and is not open to the public. It needs to be ventilated before being entered due to bad air.

An example of arched brickwork in the tunnels

A large collection of bottles and pottery discovered amongst the dirt dug out of the tunnels.

A section of the tunnels. Note the layers of dirt and lime in the tunnel.

Bill standing down in Level 3 of the multi level tunnel system. Note the ornate brickwork.

Me standing at the bottom of level 1. The sign reads "Danger, deep excavation."

Claire taking a photograph in the larger tunnels that have been opened to the public.

One of the passages in the public section.

Dual level passage way.

Bill examines the walls of the tunnel.

The large top tunnel the big dual level tunnel. This used to be full of grass and debris.

Descending into the restaurant from the big double tunnel.

The main double tunnel has been cleared out and is now a bar with the occasional disco held at night. It certainly was a good place to sit for a drink.

At the end of the day I stand by the legendary River Mersy.
